The Andhra University was established in the year 1925 by an act of the Madras legislature, Madras Act. No. II of 1926. It began as a residential institution with its special concern for honors and postgraduate teaching though it has affiliating responsibilities of the old Madras University from which it has grown.
Its School of Correspondence Course was started in 1972 to enable employees and others who could not get admissions in colleges to pursue higher studies. At present the university is offering almost all courses in Arts, Science and Engineering, Management etc. at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. At present about eighty five thousand students are on rolls in various courses through distance mode.
