Marine Engineering and Research Institute Kolkata (MERI Kolkata)

The Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) erstwhile Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET) was started in 1949 with its headquarters in Kolkata and a branch at Mumbai for imparting marine training. The MERI Kolkata is headed by Director and MERI Mumbai is headed by Dy. Director.

The MERI conducts 4 year Marine Engineering degree program equivalent to B.Tech. degree. The admission to this programme is made on the basis of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) of India.

The Marine Engineering & Research Institute Kolkata conducts 4 year Marine Engineering Course equivalent to Degree course in Marine Engineering. The intake capacity of the above course is 120 per year. Both institutes are fully equipped to impart effective training in all the branches of Marine Engineering. The cadets for admission to Marine Engineering & Research Institute, Kolkata, are selected through a combined all India entrance examination conducted by IITs every year.

The degree in marine engineering issued by marine engineering & research institute is approved as graduation certificate by Ministry Of Human Resource Development (MHRD), government of India and approved as technical qualification by all India council for technical education (AICTE). The Institution of Engineers India Limited also recognize graduation certificate issued by MERI as an exempting qualification from their A & B examination from 1982 onwards.

The MERI deserves to meet the IMO requirements for Marine Engineers working on board the ship training curriculum in this Institute has also been oriented to cover the STCW 95 convention. The MERI is also in the process of getting ISO - 9000 certification.
