Central Hindi Directorate (CHD)

The Central Hindi Directorate was established by Government of India in March 1960. The directorate functions as a subordinate office of the Ministry of Education Government of India. Since its inception the Directorate has been putting through a number of schemes for the encouragement and expansion of Hindi languages. The Correspondence Courses department of Directorate carries the responsibility of Hindi language teaching to non – Hindi speaking Indians and foreigners. The department also prepares Audio Video cassettes and CD’s which largely helps in Hindi language teaching.

Directorate has number of publications to its credit under the scheme of publication. The publications of directorate include; foreign language dictionary, bilingual/trilingual/New dictionaries, Bhasha, Varshiki and Sahitya Mala, exhibition and free distribution of Hindi books are operated. Other publications of Directorate include Hindi-Indonesian dictionary and conversational guides on Hindi-Tamil, Malayalam-Hindi and those on Hindi-Malayalam and Bangla-Hindi, Hindi-Czech.

The Central Hindi Directorate also offers prizes and awards to Hindi authors. This helps in making people incline towards the learning of Hindi language, especially in non – Hindi speaking territories. Under the scheme of ‘Services and Programmes‘ different schemes relating to promotion and development of Hindi are carried out.

The Central Hindi Directorate has been implementing two schemes relating to grants to voluntary Hindi organizations for the promotion and development of Hindi.
