Banking (Probationary Officer)


A probationary officer initially handles various departments, right from handling cheques, drafts to billing, investments and even the forex. After confirmation and considerable experience, they take on managerial responsibilities.

How do I reach my goal

Step 1: Students from any stream can join the banking sector. However, it is advisable to opt for Science or Commerce at the 10 2 level as Mathematics is an integral part of banking.

Step 2: Pursue graduation either a B.Com or BSc or BA in Economics. Graduation is the minimum qualification for a job in banking.

Step 3: Start preparing for banking exams. Banking PO (Probationary Officer) exams are not very easy and one should prepare well in advance to clear the exam. Every bank recruits its staff through written test and interview.

Step 4: Successful candidates have to undergo training for about 15-20 days before being posted in a branch.

Cons

  • A probationary officer has to undertake assignments from the seniors and learn the nitti-gritties of the various banking departments. So you will hardly have any choice to work in an area of your interest during your probation period which lasts for at least a year
  • You have to remain alert as you would be handling transactions worth lakhs and crores
  • Have to be patient in dealing with difficult clients
  • Hardly any scope for error

Banking Exams in India


To perform day to day banking operations, both front-end and backend, banks recruits human resources through banking services examinations. Basically banks hold two types of examination for recruitment of personnel:

1. Banking Services Exams and
2. Bank P.O. Exams

All banks issue nationwide notification for recruitment as these exams are centralized and recruitment is done through All India Level Examination. Both undergraduate and graduate in various streams arts, science, commerce, are recruited in banks in various posts. For details, click here

Perks

In a public sector bank a PO earns Rs 10,000 to Rs 18,500 per month. A manger earns Rs 13, 000 to Rs 20,000 per month while chief manager earns around Rs 25,000.

I am from Humanities /Arts background. Can I become a bank officer?

Sure you can. The minimum eligibility criteria for a banking jobs is that of a graduation from any stream with a minimum marks of 50%.

When do I start preparing for banking exams?

Well you do not need any additional preparation for banking entrance exams. However, you should keep practicing Maths and English and also keep yourself abreast with General Knowledge.

What are the different banking exams that I can appear for?
