Career Option - 50-60% Marks in 12th Commerce


Did you opt for Commerce in your 10+2 with the hope of pursuing higher studies in commerce, but after your exams, you feel, you can only manage somewhere between 50% and 60%?  With a score between 50% and 60% in commerce, do you feel your options are limited? Do not feel disappointed as there are still plenty of options open for you. Go on to read for the different options that are available for you after 10+2 commerce.

BBA: If you have Mathematics and English as core subjects, then Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is a good option for you.

  • Course: It is a three year degree course which is designed to impart management education and inculcate entrepreneurship skills in a student.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 from any stream provided you have Mathematics and English as core subjects and a minimum aggregate of 50%. You need to sit for entrance exams conducted by different colleges offering BBA program. For details on Business Management, Click Here.

BCA: Do you want to permanently bid good-bye to commerce but wondering what to take up next?  Then Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) is a good choice, if you have a technical bent of mind.

  • Course: Bachelor of Computer Science (BCA) is a three year degree course concentrating primarily on programming languages.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with a minimum of 50% aggregate from any stream. Entrance tests are conducted in individual colleges for admission to BCA courses. For details Click Here.

BCom: If you want to pursue your career in commerce and interested in higher studies, then you should do your graduation in BCom. But are you wondering whether your low percentage will help you continue with commerce? You can do a BCom Pass and can pursue a professional course like CA, CS or ICWA.

CA: If you have taken up Commerce at the 10+2 level, one of the first careers that you probably must have thought of is that of Chartered Accountancy. Chartered Accountancy (CA) is one of the most sought after courses in India. It is the most prestigious qualification in accounting and finance degree.

  • Eligibility: If you have passed 10+2 from any stream from a recognized school, you are eligible to apply for the Common Proficiency Test (CPT) which is essential for the Entry Level Test for the Foundation Course. ICWA: Being a Cost Accountant, is definitely another good option for Commerce students. Institute of Cost and works Accountants of India (ICWAI) promotes, regulates, and develops the profession of Cost Accountancy in India. 

  • Eligibility: A student from any stream after having passed the 10+2 examination is eligible to appear for the Foundation Course. For details, Click Here.

CS: A company secretary (CS) plays a vital role in the company’s management. A Company Secretary is expected to take crucial decisions regarding legal matters, tax, finance, excise laws, corporate laws, labour laws and corporate planning. He is the most important link connecting the shareholders, regulatory agencies and the board of directors.

  • Eligibility: For this prestigious career, you can also appear for the Foundation Program for Company Secretary, if you have passed 10+2 in any stream. For details, Click Here.

Law: Did you know that even from the Commerce stream you can pursue a career in Law? If you have analyzing, advocating and counseling skills, then law should be a good choice for you.

  • Course: BA LLB is a five year integrated program for students who wish to pursue a career in law. You can either be a civil lawyer or a criminal lawyer. Civil lawyers deal with cases pertaining to environmental issues, human rights, consumer protection and intellectual property whereas criminal lawyers deal with cases pertaining to robbery, murder, arson and rape.
  • Eligibility: You should have passed the 10+2 examination with minimum 50% marks in aggregate for being eligible to appear for Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). CLAT is conducted for admission to the undergraduate program for the eleven National Law Universities across India. For details, Click Here.

Mass Communication/Journalism: If you have a flair for writing and do not wish to continue with commerce any longer, then a course in mass communication would be just the right one for you. A mass communication degree from any reputed and recognized institute will enable you to achieve your goal. You can specialize in print journalism, advertising, radio journalism or television journalism. You can work as a reporter, copyeditor, editor, producer or journalist.

  • Eligibility: A student should have passed 10+2 from any stream. Entrance tests are conducted for admission to Mass Communication program in any institute or college of repute. Some of the important universities offering bachelors degree in mass communication or journalism courses are IP University, Delhi University, Calcutta University, and Mumbai University. BA Hons (English): ‘Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested’ – Francis Bacon.If you wish to explore the world of books and enrich yourself with thoughtful quotes like this then English honors is a very good choice for you. English Literature will open up doors for journalism as well and you can continue higher studies and opt for B.Ed or even UGC NET and be a qualified lecturer in college or university.

  • Eligibility: You have to pass 10+2 with a minimum aggregate of 50%. Many universities hold entrance tests for admission to English Hons courses. For example, Delhi University holds Combined Aptitude Test for English (CATE) for admission in various colleges. Colleges in Calcutta like Presidency College, St Xaviers and Lady Brabourne also hold entrance tests for admission to English Hons courses.

Language Courses: If you consider yourself a linguist, then you can even pursue a course in any foreign language offered by many universities or on any Indian language as well. Alternatively, you can pursue a full time regular course in any other subject and  learn French from Alliance Fran?oise, German from MaxMueller Bhavan or Italian from the Italian Embassy. 


Learning a new language armed with a BCom Pass degree or a Mass Communication/ Journalism degree will give you an added advantage over others. Embassies and even corporate orgnisations look for people with knowledge of a foreign language. Distance Learning Programs: Distance Learning Programs are getting immense popularity among students in India. It helps an individual to pursue a course of his or her choice and at the same time can concentrate on other professional courses. As a commerce student, you can pursue your BCom through distance learning and pursue professional courses like CA, ICWA or CS.


You can also pursue a part-time job and get the much needed experience in your field.     AICTE means All India Council for Technical Education. Does it mean all technical courses such as B.Tech, M.Tech, Phd in Engineering need to be AICTE approved? If any of the above course is only UGC approved, will have same validation similar to AICTE approved course? Many Industries such as Tata Motors do not accept UGC approved degrees? They accept only AICTE approved degrees. How we can give them the justification ? Please reply.
