Officers Electrical BranchThe Navy vessels are like mini townships and have their own power generation and transmission system. The navy also uses sophisticated systems like radar, sonar, missile guidance systems, and communication and navigation systems.
Most of this equipment is controlled by computer or microprocessor. Electrical engineers undertake the responsibility of maintaining all this equipment. They are also based on vessels as well as at the naval dockyards and production centers.
Officers Marine EngineeringThe Navy's fleet including warships, submarines and aircraft use modern equipment including advanced turbine and propulsion equipment. Marine engineers are responsible for ensuring that all of this equipment is always in serviceable condition. Marine engineers work on board vessels as well at the naval dockyards and research facilities.
Officers ArchitectsNaval architects have the responsibility of designing, manufacturing and maintaining naval warships and submarines. This is a highly specialized field and calls for specialized training. With the Navy going in for indigenous manufacturing at it's facilities in Mumbai and elsewhere, Naval Architects have opportunities to work on the latest technologies of ship design and construction.
Navy Officer Qualification Criteria
Age - The applicant for the post of Officer in the Electrical wing after 10+2 [(Tech) Cadet Entry] should be of the age between 16 ½ -19 years (i.e. he should not be less than 16 ½ or more than 19 years on the date of enrolment).
Nationality – Applicant for the post of Officer in the Electrical wing/Marine Engineering/ Architect after 10+2 [(Tech) Cadet Entry] should be a resident Indian. Some friendly countries that send their nationals for this training are also selected but the concerned Countries have to take permission from the Government of India or
- a subject of Bhutan, or
- a subject of Nepal, or
- a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
- a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, the East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.
Candidates belonging to categories (1), (2), (3) and (4) above must possess a certificate of eligibility, issued by the Government of India. Certificate of eligibility is not, however, necessary in the case of candidates who are Gorkha national of Nepal.
Marital Status - Applicant for the post of Officer in the Electrical wing after 10+2 [(Tech) Cadet Entry] should be an Unmarried male.
Navy Officer Educational Qualification
1st Condition – Applicant for the post of Officer in the Electrical/ Marine Engineering /Architect after 10+2 [(Tech) Cadet Entry] should have passed Class 12th or its equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with an aggregate of at least 75% in PCM and 50% marks in English either in 10th or 10+2 from a recognized board of school education.

The candidate applying for the post of Naval Officer Electrical Branch/Marine Engineering/Architect should have a minimum height of 157 cm with proportionate body weight depending on the age and height of the candidate. The prospective sailor(Artificer Apprentice) should also have proportionate chest with minimum expansion capability of 05 cms.
Candidate applying for the post of Naval Officer Electrical Branch/Marine Engineering/Architect should possess good mental and physical health, should be free from any disease / disability and have no cardio vascular disease, surgical deformities like Knock-Knees, Flatfoot.
Candidate applying for the post of Naval Officer Electrical Branch/Marine Engineering/Architect should possess Colour perception standard of CP II and Eyes Visual standards should meet the under mentioned prescribed standards for both the conditions that is with glasses AND without glasses.
The candidate applying for the post of Naval Officer Electrical Branch/Marine Engineering/Architect must make sure that his eyesight follows the following parameters.
Without Glasses, better eye should be of 6/12 and the worst eye should be of 6/12, while with Glasses the better eye should be of 6/9 while the worst eye should be of 6/12.
Navy Officer Procedure to apply
The course commences in the month of August. Details of the course and advertisements start appearing in employment news and leading newspapers in the month of May/June.
Shortlisted candidates are called for SSB interviews (5 day excluding day of arrival) at Bhopal, Bangalore or Allahabad.
The 4 ½ years of training includes basic training of 6 months at IMA, Dehradun followed by Stage I of 2 ½ years at College of Military Engineering, Pune.
Stage II of 1 year at one of the following Colleges viz., College of Military Engineering, Pune / Military College of Electrical & Mechanical Engineers at Secunderabad/ Military College of telecommunication Engineering, Mhow depending upon the arms/services allotted.
Stage III of 6 months in any of the institutions given above.
On successful completion of the course, the candidate is awarded the Degree of Egineering.On the completion of 3 years of the course the candidates are given a stipend of Rs. 8000 per month and after the completion of the 4th year, they are given the rank of Lt.
The other way is that they are called at the Naval Engineering College, Lonavala and after the completion of the course, they are awarded the Degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
Navy Officer Job Prospects
A Sub Lieutenant generally starts in the pay scale of Rs. 8250-10050 and an Officer usually goes upto the post of Captain before retirement.
