Over the last many years, the Indian poultry farming industry has been growing steadily with an annual growth rate of 20%. The present worth of India’s poultry industry is more than Rs.70, 000 millionand employs over 700,000 people.

A Number of factors have helped this industry flourish. Significant among them are:

  • Growing demand for a low priced source of protein-rich nutrients, provided by eggs and chickens.
  • Low maintenance cost and minimum space requirements
  • Chickens adapt easily to almost any condition and profits are quite high.

Typical poultry farm jobs involve various tasks related to:

  • Management of the Farm
  • Breeding and rearing Chicks
  • Preventing, diagnosing and controlling disease
  • Feed formulation and analysis
  • Administration and Personnel Management
  • Marketing
  • Finance

Poultry Farming Eligibility Criteria

Although no precise educational qualifications are laid down for this occupation, it will be helpful to have a basic qualification in animal sciences, zoology or related subjects. Graduates in veterinary sciences (B.Vsc. & AH) can choose poultry farming as a career choice.

Many institutions offer short, medium or long-term courses. Organizations dealing in agricultural extension training, NGOs, farmer training centers and rural agriculture banking institutions also impart training to promote poultry farming in India.

Poultry Farming Career Prospects

A variety of jobs can be taken up in various hatcheries, veterinary hospitals, pharmaceutical concerns, feed millers and feed production companies, feed analysis laboratories.

Once established in the field and after attaining some exposure and expertise in poultry farming, one can set up own poultry farms. A large number of entrepreneurs in the country have taken up these types of ventures and have become quite successful too.
