Do you choose your career or your career chooses you?

Choosing a career that is right for you can be very difficult. You think you have found the perfect career path and suddenly it strikes you that you don't really want to do it. This happens often among college students who either graduate or dropout half the way during their college years. Choosing the right direction to take your career can be frustrating.

For many people, work is a necessary evil - it's what we do to allow us to afford to do fun things in our leisure time. Recent research found that 60% of us would have chosen a different career if we had our time again; 40% of people openly admit to having "drifted" into their job.

Imagine you enjoy your work just as much as you enjoy your vacation time, you wouldn’t mind if you weren't even paid for it.  Consider yourself lucky if you are able to find yourself a job that you love. An average person works about 40 hours a week till the age of 40 years - approximately 80,000 hours of your life. So doesn't it make sense to spend your time in doing something you love doing?

And there's another point of consideration- most people don't know what they really want to do. Because we are accustomed from an early age to look up to those around us - parents, teachers, peers, the media – their definition for a good job or career, and most of us never take the time really to get to know our own interest, talents and desires.

Parent Pressure

We lack the point of view and most of the times are imprudent. Parents compel their children - to complete their unfulfilled dreams - i.e. whose decision plays major role in shaping and choosing ones career? A parent can always guide their child, but it is for a child to decide finally.

Peer Pressure

At times you follow your friends – it is not necessary that what ever your best friend is interested in will definitely make good career choice for you too.

Media Influence

Nowadays, there is lot of influence of media and many of you tend to get swayed away by the glamorized version of the careers but then it is for you to decide whether that is the kind of career you wish to have.

Just Like that

There can be many reason why you chose your present career, which now you realize is not the career for you, for instance- when you started searching for the job, you chose the first career  that came across you and thus your future career.

Personal Issues

Reasons such as personal problems like financial difficulty in pursuing higher education, sudden death of the bread earner in the family, health condition also force you to choose a career that you don’t like Or at times you choose a career out of necessity say for instance you want to be a painter or a writer but we all know that success in such careers doesn’t come handy, so till the time you taste success something is needed to keep you going on. Therefore you have to choose an alternative career path which obviously  will be not  of your choice. Think thoroughly and analyze properly before deciding a career on which your entire life depends.

We at National Network of Education(NNE) would suggest that if you want to be one of those fortunate persons to have a dream job then you have to start as early as before qualifying your class 10th,. It is for your parents to help you in deciding one and not choosing one. Get your child exposed to various careers at right age and  guide him select the stream.

To get a correct idea of a career – Meet the people from the same career that interests you is a great way to get a jump-start to your dream career. They'll not only let you know about opportunities in the field, but they can also give you some great advice based on their experience. However, in order to get the information you need, you have to ask the right questions to the persons already working in the field. By getting a person's perspective on his or her career, you can think about how you want to plan your own career path.

  • Why initially did you choose this as a career?
  • If you were choosing a career today, would you make the same choice?
  • How did you get your job?
  • What is the part about your job that you like the least?
  • Do you enjoy coming to work every day?
  • What are the most important qualifications to succeed in this career?
  • What kind of training and/or schools would you recommend for this field?
  • What are the major challenges in this field?
  • What opportunities do you see arising in this field?
  • List some organizations who are working in this field
  • Can you recommend anyone else who can tell me more about this industry?
  • Do you know of any organizations that hire fresher?

Choose the questions that are the most suitable for your area of interest and listen carefully to the answers you get. What you discover may be your ticket to a great job and a great career.
