Materials Engineering in India is also known as Materials Science or Materials Science & Engineering.

This branch of engineering primarily deals with properties of matter and applications of materials in various domains of science and engineering. Materials Engineering is an interdisciplinary field and makes hot career choice for students, because of its vastness of applications.

A course in materials engineering or materials science teaches relation between structure of matter at atomic or molecular scale and macroscopic properties of materials. Coursework in materials engineering includes applied physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering.

With the arrival of new sciences like nanoscience and nanotechnology, materials science gained momentum in technical colleges and universities. Materials Science also makes an integral part of forensic engineering and failure analysis.

They deal with extracting, developing, processing, and testing of different materials and minerals. Various materials and minerals are used in the production of consumer goods ranging from washroom utilities to airplane, computers, and war guns, the list is endless.

Eligibility Criteria

  • 10+2 Science with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English is mandatory for admission into Materials Engineering course.

  • Entrance Exam is conducted at both national and state level for admission.

  • To pursue M.E. or M.Tech one needs to qualify GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering.

  • PhD can be taken up after completion of post graduate studies.

Career and Job Prospects

  • Materials Engineers begin working in manufacturing or technical support industry, and later moves onto management, development and sales, consulting or research. Materials Engineers works at the forefront of many industries as every new piece of product gets derived from some set of materials. For example, the advancement that we see today in telecommunications and cellular phones become possible due to contributions of materials engineers.

  • In microelectronics, materials engineers  work on making microelectronic units smaller, faster and cost effective. They focus on increasing the capacity of magnetic memory devices like hard drives and storage capacity of permanent magnetic devices. Materials engineers are guiding the development of strong, lightweight composites in high-tech industries like aeronautical.

  • Today, we have lightweight aircraft, smart clothing fibers, increased fuel efficiency all due to developments in materials sciences and contributions of materials engineers and scientists.

Salary Package

An average salary of a Materials Engineering graduate is INR 359,150. Other incentives are also given based on the position and company you work in.

Experience, qualification and performance are the key factors in getting a promotion and a subsequent rise in salary.
