Radio Jockey


If you like chattering non-stop, and like to lose yourself in the world of music too, who says it’s not going to help you much when it comes to your career? But now it could just be perfect combination of skills needed for an out of the ordinary career option called Radio Jockeying.

The opening up of the airwaves to the private sector in 1999 saw a surge in radio programs and consequently there is a need for well-trained radio personnel.

The last decade has brought a sea change in the way people look at entertainment. People are constantly demanding quality entertainment and this has in turn led to the emergence of dozens of job opportunities

RJs anchor music programs, play music on air, provide information on the music, weather and traffic and also play requests from listeners.

Radio Jockey Skills


The most essential attribute which an RJ must possess is his/her ability to connect with the listener. An RJ should be friendly, spontaneous, be warm and have a good voice and command over the language. Youngsters are generally preferred as they are not only full of new ideas but also have zeal for socializing with masses.

Here, aspirants must keep into account that surely it takes more than a good voice to woo the new–age smart listeners. For those serious about this profession, the general suggestion is to listen to a lot of radio and try to put you in the hearts of listeners and always attempt and come up with innovative ideas.

Radio Jockey Eligibility Criteria


What matters most in this profession are, your voice and a clear diction. You should be able to adjust your voice and control the pitches of your voice. For example, if you, as an RJ are doing a programme targeted at the youth, you have to sound bubbly. On the other hand you need to sound more serious and mature for an older audience.

Radio Jockey Job Prospects


Radio JockeyYou could work for radio stations like AIR (All India Radio), Times FM, Radio Mrchi and dozens of other private players.

AIR holds auditions every 3 months and the selected RJs are given in-house training for 2 months in everything from CD players to mixers to Digital audio technology.

Some well- known RJs have started their own training schools. There have been cases when RJs who could express their ideas and possessed screen presence, smoothly ventured into TV media.

Radio Jockey Pay Package


Beginners get around Rs.10, 000 to Rs.15, 000 per month and with popularity their salary keeps multiplying and with some experience and genuine talent, one can hope to rise quickly in this profession.

Radio Jockey Institutes


Though no formal qualification is required, a degree is generally a pre requisite. Though there are number of universities and institutes that offer courses in communication and broadcasting, there are hardly any specialized courses in Radio Jockeying field.

The courses offered by these institutes vary from two-month certificate course to one-year postgraduate programme. Besides, there are a host of crash courses in voiceovers or mixing run by professional in the field There are a couple of training institutes that train you on how to handle auditions.

Short term workshops that focus on pronunciation, intonation, modulation of voice, pitch e reading styles; music appreciation and creative thinking are also conducted.
