Radiography is a paramedical professional course which is offered to individuals for performing diagnostic tests in medical treatment by the use of radiation.
In the commonest sense radiography may be the science of taking images of the internal and hidden portions of the human body (generally not visible) for the purpose of diagnosing diseases and ailments and ensuring that they get the proper medical attention, including surgery. This includes ultrasound, X-ray, CT scan, MRI, etc.
This is a caring profession, which calls for considerable technological expertise. Radiographers work as part of the healthcare team in many areas of the hospital including the Diagnostic Imaging Department, Accident & Emergency, Intensive Care Unit and Operating Theatre.
Radiographers are responsible for producing high quality images to assist in the diagnosis of disease and injury. The demand of radiographers has increased considerably in recent times with significant technological development in medical sciences.
Radiography Eligibility Criteria
An aspiring individual, who wants to pursue B.Sc radiography, should have completed intermediate in Science (10+2) preferably with Physics, Chemistry and Biology/Maths. The duration of the course is three years.
One can also take up one year certificate courses after 10+2 Science. There are some institutes which also conduct Diploma in diagnostic radiography and Radiotherapy of two years duration.
The skills and attributes required for a radiographer is such that he/she should have a calm temperament, an objective approach towards the patients and an understanding of people of all ages, the ability to infuse confidence in patients, tolerance, a strong willpower, strength of mind and purpose are essential for people. Good communication skills and a spirit for teamwork, good powers of observation, accurate judgment and self-confidence are others aspects of a skilled radiographers.
Radiography Career Prospects
Radiography is one of the most promising career options in paramedical field. Employment prospects for radiographers are good, both within the country as well as in abroad. With the health services increasing by leaps and bounds the radiographers are constantly in demand in nursing homes, hospitals, diagnostic centres as well as superspeciality hospitals. The more brilliant and experienced ones among can them get assignments in developed countries across the world.
In India, radiographers can work both in private & government hospitals. One can also work on part time basis according to his/her convenience.
However, private practice will give you more earnings. Set up your own clinic for various tests. Get into understanding with local doctors / hospitals that can refer their patients to the clinic / lab
Radiography Pay Package
Radiographers find ample opportunities in hospitals, health centres, and in research labs. In India, the average starting salary of a radiographer generally ranges between Rs.7, 000 – Rs.10, 000 per month in govt. /private hospitals. However, the earnings are more in private practice as compared to salaried jobs.
Opportunities are also there in gulf countries and Middle East countries. In these countries radiographers get salaries between Rs.30, 000 – Rs.50, 000 per month. In UK, the average starting salary of a newly qualified Radiographer is around £17,000 per year which is much more than in India.
