Criminology Career Option


Criminology as a subject tries to throw light on complex issues related to crime and criminal justice. By making use of tools of criminology, criminologists try to delve deep into various questions like:
  • Who commits crimes and why?
  • How society responds towards a crime in general and towards a criminal in particular?
  • And, how the intensity of a crime is measured?
Criminologists find out ways to understand the nature and impact of behavioral and social problems which alleviate crimes. Criminologists work towards formulating policy making for juvenile justice, drug addiction, cyber crimes, violence, crime prevention, Indigenous justice, and organized crimes.

Criminology Eligibility Criteria


Education Requirements:
Many Indian universities offer both undergraduate and Post Graduate courses in Criminology. While the basic requirements for getting admission into an undergraduate course is kept as a pass at XIIth standard with either Arts or Science background, for Post Graduation one has to be a graduate with science or arts subjects.

Training Programs: Degree and Post Graduate courses in Criminology/Criminology and Correctional Management/Criminology and Forensic Science are offered by various institutions in India.

Degree holders can also opt for the one year diploma or two year postgraduate diploma course in Criminology. There are also specialized courses in criminology for those who have graduated in Law.

Syllabus: The syllabus for a course in Criminology usually includes - Principles of Criminology, Psychology of Crime, Criminal Law, Police Administration, Forensic Science and Medicine, Juvenile Delinquency, Correctional Management and Rehabilitation of Criminals etc.
 

Criminology Career Prospects


The experts in criminology can find employment as probation officers, jailors, social welfare officers, counselors etc. They can also get into crime fighting Organizations like CBI, IB etc. or work in rehabilitation centers, juvenile homes and voluntary organizations.

Those who have specialized training in forensic science can seek employment in forensic labs or in the forensic department of crime fighting units.

Self-employment is possible as private detectives. Insurance Companies as well as some corporate houses employ investigating officers to ascertain the bonafides of a client.
