Post- Tsunami disaster, the whole world has surely wakened to the importance of effective disaster management and its training.Down the ages, natural disasters have always been taking e a heavy toll on human life and property.
Going by the United Nations estimates, the past two decades alone witnessed more than three million lives being lost to natural disasters and around 800 million have being affected by one calamity or the other.
Each year at least four cyclones hit parts of India's almost 6,000 km long coastline, earthquakes of varying magnitude rock many parts of India and thousands die of severe cold or heat waves.
Since natural calamities like earthquakes and floods are not only unavoidable but also unpredictable, concrete strategies have to be made to withstand the aftermath of catastrophes.
After the tsunami devastation, the Government has been proactive in formulating strategies in this regard. The setting Disaster Management Authority and becoming member t of the international warning system are some of the steps in this regard.
Many educational institutions have also come up with innovative programs to further facilitate awareness among the masses on this crucial subject.
Disaster Management Job Prospects
A lot of bright career avenues await professionals who have a certificate in disaster management in addition to a professional qualification. For example, An IT professional can surely be an asset in disaster management as he can apply his IT knowledge in various software designed for disaster management, likewise an engineer can work on such building designs which minimizes the hazards of various disasters.
International organizations such as World Bank and ADB, Government organizations such as the NIDM and the State Disaster Management Centers, various institutions, insurance companies, large industrial establishments and NGOs also offer great job prospects.
Now every States is setting up a disaster management authority which further creates demand for disaster management professionals.
