Meteorology is a sub-discipline of Atmospheric science that mainly focuses on weather processes and forecasting. The field includes both weather and climate and is concerned with the physical, dynamical (a force producing change or motion), and chemical state of the Earth's atmosphere and interactions between the atmosphere and the Earth's surface.
To make a career in meteorology, one needs sufficient interests and educational standard. There are many rewarding career opportunities for meteorologist (a specilist who studies various earthly processes in the atmosphere).
A student desirous of making a career in Meteorology or Atmospheric Science may opt for an undergraduate course i.e. B.Sc. or B.Tech soon after the completion of his/her + Science (class 12th). A number of universities including IITs are offering undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Meteorology/Atmospheric Sciences.
A master's program i.e. M.Sc or M.Tech can usually be completed in two years after the bachelor's degree. The requirement for admission to this program is usually an undergraduate degree in meteorology, physics, engineering, or related disciplines.
Students who wish to carry out research work go for PhD.. The minimum education qualification for this is a master’s degree in relevant field.
Below are given names of few courses and their minimum qualification:
M.Sc in Meteorology Eligibility: B.Sc in Physics/Chemistry or any other relevant branch of science.
Diploma in Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences Eligibility: M.Sc in Metereology
B.Tech Meteorology/Atmospheric Science Eligibility: + 2 Science with Physics, Chemistry
M.Tech Meteorology Eligibility: BTech or M.Sc in Metereology or any other equivalent discipline
PhD Eligibility: Masters degree in Meteorology/Atmospheric Science or allied field.
Meteorologists find jobs mainly in government sector. However some private companies also recruit atmospheric scientists for environmental pollution control. A country’s Military operations such as troop movements, airplane flights, missile launches, and ship movements rely on accurate weather information. Hence, here the role of a meteorologist becomes crucial.
A meteorology degree or a degree in related marine science qualifies an individual to perform many weather-related jobs. There are good opportunities for overseas assignment to military bases and outposts throughout the world.
Space application centres also recruit meteorologists as the launching of satellite also depends on weather conditions. The Indian meteorological department has its braches all over India, hence meteorologists are absorbed there.
Here is a list of few institutes/organizations in India where meteorologists can find jobs -
Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, • India Meteorology Department, • Indian Air Force • Space Application Centre • National Remote Sensing Agency • Defence Research and Development Organisation • Indian Space Research Organisation
Meteorology is a rare field of science; hence there are few people who opt for this course. However the career is challenging and rewarding. Salary of a meteorologist/scientist depends on his qualification and experience. The Indian Government offers handsome salary to qualified meteorologists/scientists. It varies between Rs 10, 000 – 25, 000.
One having outstanding knowledge and experience can also find job in abroad. There the salary does not become a factor. The US government offers annual package that varies between $19,081 and $69,300.
