The prestigious Loyola College, Chennai was founded by Fr. Francis Bertram in July 1925. It enjoys the status of an autonomous college and has been affiliated to University of Madras. It has also been conferred with A+ grade by NAAC for its academic excellence and achievements. It offers courses both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. As an autonomous college, Loyola has adopted the semester-cum-credit system. At the undergraduate level (B.A., B.Sc., & B.Com.) the curriculum is for three years. Loyola College enjoys the rare distinction of being one of the top ten commerce colleges in the country. The Department of Commerce at Loyola began in 1945 with B.Com (Hons). Prof. G. Soundarajan, the first head of the department, along with a team of eminent professors such as V. Seshan, D.V. Krishnamoorthy, S. Swaminathan, N.M. Narayanan and S. Arockiaswamy, were responsible for building and nurturing the department into one of the premier commerce department under the University of Madras.
