A National Task Force on IT and Software Development established by the Prime Minister of India in 1998 recommended the need for establishing IT institutions in the country which could produce skilled manpower in the areas of computers and information technologies. Further, the Ministry of Human Resource Development formed the Rame Gowda Committee which submitted its project report regarding the feasibility and logistics of establishing a National Institute of Excellence in Information Technology with allied sciences for carrying out the research and development with an
emphasis on industry linkages and networking at national and international levels. Based on the recommendations of expert committee, the government of India decided to bring first information technology institute in Allahabad. And thus the Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad (IIITA) was came to fore in 1999.
The IITA was conferred with "Deemed University" status in 2000 and thus it got the autonomy of designing its own course, conduct its own exam in information technology and allied disciplines and confer its own degrees and diplomas. The institute is looked upon for producing manpower of excellence in the field of Information Technology and allied disciplines.
The campus of Indian Institute of Information Technology Allahabad (IITA) acquires nearly 100 acres of land in wonderful surrounding of Deoghat, Jhalwa; Allahabad. The institute is designed meticulously on the Penrose Geometric Pattern which is further topped by fine landscaping.
The institute believes in the concept of exchanging education and hence has collaborations with industry and government, both national and overseas. To blend the technology with bio sciences the institute has an Indo-Russian Center for Biotechnology and video conferencing facility for networking with leading institutions in India and overseas.
The campus-based Gyan Vani regularly broadcasts educational programms.
