Gauhati University Distance Education
Gauhati University came into being by an act of the State Legislature, namely, the Gauhati University Act 1947, of the Government of Assam in the year 1948. The University is the oldest, largest, and the most prime educational institution of higher studies in the entire North Eastern Region of India.
The first Court meeting of the University was held on 26-1-48 at the old Sudmerson Hall of Cotton College, Guwahati. Subsequently, the date '26 January' is observed as the Foundation Day of Gauhati University. The functioning of the University initially started from the city centre but afterwards in 1955-56 it was shifted to the present campus.
The University is funded by the
University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Government of Assam. Besides, various agencies of the Central Government, the State Government agencies also provide various grants and assistance for Research and other Academic activities. The University has been awarded a 4-star status by the
National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of
UGC.
Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) - Gauhati University (GU) offers graduate and post graduate programs in various streams. These programs are considered equivalent to regular programs of any other university and approved from regulatory bodies like Distance Education Council (DEC),
University Grants Commission (UGC) etc. The IDOL programs are extremely beneficial to those students who lives in far flung areas and can not attend regular university lectures
