Earth is gradually slowing down. Every few years, an extra second is added to make up for lost time. Millions of years ago, a day on Earth will have been 20 hours long. It is believed that, in millions of years time, a day on Earth will be 27 hours long.

Earth is almost five billion years old, although life (resembling life as we know it) has only existed on the planet for the last 150 million to 200 million years. This means that life has only been present on Earth for only 5%-10% of its lifetime.

Life In Outer Space
Extra-terrestrial micro-organisms are entering earths atmosphere every day suggesting existence of life in outer space, according to the scientific and technical officer of Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) Arvind Paranpye.
This has been established from the analysis of data collected by Indian Space Research Organisation`s (ISRO) cryogenic sampler payload flown on-board a balloon on January 21 this year, he said in a statement made in Pune.
Paranpye said analysis of samples at Cardiff had indicated that about a third of a tonne of extra-terrestrial bacterial matter enters every day into the earth`s atmosphere, possibly forming part of over 100 tonnes of cometary material that enters earth`s atmosphere daily.
The results were reported at the astrobiology session of the 46th annual conference at San Diego by Prof Chandra Wickramsinghe on behalf of the Indo-UK team of scientists.
While further analysis was in progress at CCMB and Cardiff, the evidence collected so far was indeed dramatic and path breaking, and could lead to several discoveries regarding life and diseases from outer space.
Research was conducted by Prof J V Narlikar and his team assisted by P Rajaratnam, project director of ISRO`s cryosampler based experiment programme.
