NBHM - PhD Examination National Board for Higher Mathematics

The National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) conducts a written examination for the grant of scholarships to students for pursuing research for a Ph.D. degree in Mathematics.

The participation in the test is also essential for candidates who wish to join Ph. D. programs in Mathematics in the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai and the Harish-Chandra Research Institute (HRI), Allahabad are required to appear for this written test.

The entrance test is usually held in the month of January at different centres all over the country.

Scholarship

Eligible candidates will be awarded a scholarship amount of Rs. 8,000/- (Rs. eight thousand only) per month, a contingency grant of Rs. 5000/- (Rs. five thousand only) per annum and house rent allowance as per central government norms wherever applicable.

The scholarships are for a total period of five years, sanctioned for one year at a time and renewable at the end of the year, subject to satisfactory progress. The scholarship amount may be enhanced to Rs. 9000/- (Rs. nine thousand only) per month after evaluation by the board at the end of the second year.

To avail of the scholarship the students have to enroll in an appropriate institution for a Ph.D. degree in mathematics. The scholarship will be paid through the institution they join.

Eligibility

Education: Applicants must have achieved B.A./B.Sc./B.Tech./B.E./M.A./M.Sc. degree with consistent academic record in all years from +2 level to the present. Final year students of these degree courses can also apply provided they fulfill the eligibility criteria at the time of admission.  

Age: Applicants should be below the age of 25 years as on January 1 of the year of admission. Exceptional cases, however, may be considered on merit.

How to apply

Applications on plain paper should be made in a specific format. They should be sent in duplicate along with a recent passport size photograph attached to each copy and a self-addressed envelope, affixed with Rs.5/- postage stamp, to the Zoanal Coordinators concerned for a particular zone meant for entrance test.

The envelope containing the application should be super scribed, “NBHM Ph. D. Scholarship”. A candidate may send separate applications independently to more than one zone.

However, in general, applications will not be transferred from one zone to another. Names of two centres from the respective zone must be clearly indicated giving the order of preference. A centre of candidate’s choice will be allotted, as far as possible. If necessary, the zonal coordinator may some times allot some other centre close to the indicated alternatives.

Note: Applications should NOT be sent to the NBHM office.

Written test

The written test will be based on questions in topics normally covered in Master’s degree programmes in Mathematics. The test will be for two and half hours and involve questions with short answers. Some details about the structure of the test and some sample questions will be sent with the call letters and will also be available on the NBHM web page i.e. www.nbhm.dae.gov.in. Selection will be made on the basis of a written test followed by interview of short-listed candidates.

Important Note: The candidates who wish to be considered for Ph. D. programs in Mathematics in the Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai and the Harish-Chandra ResearchInstitute (HRI), Allahabad are required to appear for this written test. The written test is conducted at the following centres, divided into five separate zones:

Zone 1: Chandigarh, New Delhi
Zone 2: Allahabad, Indore, Jabalpur
Zone 3: Goa, Mumbai, Pune, Vallabh Vidyanagar
Zone 4: Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Kolkata, Ranchi
Zone 5: Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad
