Master's Degree in Mass Communication


Masters program in Mass communication or MA in Mass Communication is of two years duration. The course equips student with not just one stream but with a holistic knowledge of all the different mediums. Whether its print or audio-visual journalism or corporate communication, or radio production, a student learns every thing in it. The two-year master's course in Mass Communication is a blend of theory and practical.

Usually the first term consists of six subjects -

   1. Communication theory/research and evaluation
   2. Visual Communication
   3. Sound for the media
   4. Traditional entertainment
   5. Audio video production and still photography
   6. Radio production

The subjects which are taken up in the second semester are usually Video and television production, Film production and Media appreciation. A student is also familiarized with the web media.

Eligibility for Master's in Mass Communication:


A candidate at least needs 50% marks in graduation for pursuing a postgraduate degree or MA in Mass Communication. Admission to postgraduate degree in Mass Communication is based upon a written test and interview conducted by individual universities.

PG Institutes for Mass Communication


The universities and institutes offering courses in mass communication at post-graduation level are few. Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Delhi; AJK Mass Communication Research Centre of Jamia Millia Islamia University and Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication, Pune are the prominent institutes that offers masters in this course among other universities. But they have limited seats. To select the best candidates, universities conduct written examination. A shortlisted student is asked to appear for the interview, which is the basis of his final selection. Post graduation in Mass Communication empower students with the ability to exploit the media to full extent.

Reservation of Seats

The universities that offer M.A in Masters in Mass Communication also keep certain seats reserved for students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs). Some relaxation is also provided to the Children of Ex-servicemen and certain percentage is reserved for outside state candidates also. But the reservation percentages vary from institute to institute.

While in Ch. Charan Singh University, located in Merrut, UP, Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes students are allotted 21 and 2 percents seats in the course respectively, the percentages reserved for the same categories in AJK Mass Communication Research Centre of Jamia Milia Islamia are 15 and 7 percent respectively. Besides, 25 percent seats are also reserved for Jamia Pass outs. Those who are physically challenged too can avail the reservation benefit which is 3 percent of the total seats in the course.
