Undergraduate Medical Courses

MBBS

MBBS stands for Bachelor of medicine and Bachelor of surgery. It is the basic degree for an aspiring allopathic doctor. MBBS, as a career option, has huge scope in India.

Seats and Course Duration

There are 248 colleges (government and private) approved by the Medical Council of India, with an annual intake of 28,742 students. The course duration in most colleges is 5 and half years, which include three semesters each of 18 month duration and 1 year devoted to compulsory rotating internship.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed such that it trains students to undertake responsibilities of a physician of first contact, who is capable of looking after the patients.

Fees

Fee varies from institute to institute. The cost of an MBBS programme from All India Institute of Medical Sciences for an outstation candidate is Rs 970 and that for a local candidate is Rs 332 every year. For an institute like JIPMER, it may go up to Rs 10,000-12,000 per annum and for a private college, it may go up to as high as 2-3 lakhs per annum (excluding hostel and mess charges).

Eligibility and Admission Process

In general, the prospective students shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the MBBS course, they must have completed a HSC (10+2, or high school) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics with at least 50% marks and the rank obtained in the entrance examination.

Foreign candidates nominated by the Government of India are required to have obtained a minimum of FIFTY PERCENT (50%) marks in aggregate in the subjects of ENGLISH, PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY (Organic and Inorganic) and BIOLOGY (Botany and Zoology) in their Pre-Medical/Intermediate Science or an equivalent examination to be eligible for admission to the M.B.B.S. Course.

BDS

The graduate degree required for you to become a dentist is the Bachelors of Dental Sciences (BDS). A wide range of courses like basic anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology and microbiology are taught. Specialization in dentistry and hands-on-practice are during the two final semesters.

Seats and Course Duration

There are around 250 colleges, with an annual intake of about 15,000 students. This program is of 4 years duration, followed by 1 year compulsory rotating internship.

Curriculum

The course is designed such in a way that it inculcates in them, an understanding of the scientific basis of dentistry including the relevant medical sciences, the mechanisms of knowledge acquisition and the variety of techniques that have been developed for the recognition, investigation, prevention and treatment of patients.

It may vary, but, in general, the prospective students shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the MBBS course, they must have completed a HSC (10+2, or high school) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics with at least 50% marks and the rank obtained in the entrance examination.

BHMS & DHMS

The Homoeopathic Education in India is presently monitored by the National Institute of Homoeopathy, which is a statutory Central Government body. There are 2 courses available in the undergraduate level – Bachelor of Homeopathic and Medicine (BHMS) and Surgery and Diploma in Homeopathic and Medicine Surgery (DHMS).

Seats and Course Duration

There are about 160 colleges in India that offer courses in homeopathic education, in India. BHMS is a degree course of 5 and half years (which includes 12 months of internship), while DHMS is a diploma course of 4 years.

Curriculum

Instead of allopathic pharmacology, homeopathic students have to study materia medica (collected knowledge about the therapeutic properties of any substance used for healing), organon of medicine, pharmacy and repertory.

Eligibility and Admission Process

It may vary, but, in general, the prospective students shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the BHMS course, they must have completed a HSC (10+2, or high school) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics with at least 50% marks and the rank obtained in the entrance examination.

Foreign candidates nominated by the Government of India are required to have obtained a minimum of FIFTY PERCENT (50%) marks in aggregate in the subjects of ENGLISH, PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY (Organic and Inorganic) and BIOLOGY (Botany and Zoology) in their Pre-Medical/Intermediate Science or an equivalent examination to be eligible for admission to the BHMS course.

B.A.M.S

BAMS stands for Bachelors in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery. The Ayurvedic Education in India is presently being monitored by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), which is a statutory Central Government body.

Seats and Course Duration

Around 150 colleges offer BAMS. The duration of the course is 5 and half years, which includes 12 months of internship.

Curriculum

Curriculum of B.A.M.S. course consists of studies of metaphysics, human Anatomy, detailed information about plants, physiology, and diagnosis of pathological state of body, minerals and animal products as medicine, preparation of various herbo mineral formulations, and their management and treatment. Various branches of studies consist of Medicine, Surgery, Eye, E.N.T., Gynaecology & Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Panchkarma.

It may vary, but, in general, the prospective students shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the BAMS course, they must have completed a HSC (10+2, or high school) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics with at least 50% marks and the rank obtained in the entrance examination.

Foreign candidates nominated by the Government of India are required to have obtained a minimum of FIFTY PERCENT (50%) marks in aggregate in the subjects of ENGLISH, PHYSICS, CHEMISTRY (Organic and Inorganic) and BIOLOGY (Botany and Zoology) in their Pre-Medical/Intermediate Science or an equivalent examination to be eligible for admission to the B.A.M.S course.

B.U.M.S

Bachelor of Unani Medicine (BUMS) is an undergraduate degree course in Unani Medicine & Surgery. The Unani Education in India is being monitored by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), which is a statutory Central Government body.

Seats and Course Duration

The duration of the course is 5 and half years, which includes 12 months of internship.

Curriculum

The aim of the programme is to produce experts in the field of Unani system of medicine. There are four treatment therapies employed in Unani medicine in India. These include regimental therapy venasection, pharmaco-therapy, surgery, dietotherapy.

Eligibility and Admission Process

All the admitted candidates in BUMS Course are required to submit a certificate that he/she has passed 8th Class Examination with Hindi. If he/she fails to submit the same certificate, he/she will not be awarded the degree of BUMS course until he/she submits the certificate to this effect.

For admission to above course he/she must has passed Urdu and English as a subject either at the qualifying examination or High School/Matriculation/Secondary Examination or equivalent.

He/She has attained or will attain the age of Seventeen (17) years as on 31st October of the academic year in which he/she is applying.

B.V.Sc and A.H

B.V.Sc & A.H is an undergraduate course in Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry. The Veterinary education in India is being monitored by the Veterinary Council of India.

Seats and Course Duration


The course is for 5 and half years, including a 6 month compulsory rotating internship.

Curriculum

The aim of the course is to equip the students with all the essential skills required to treat sick animals and be competent enough to deal with sudden outbreaks of diseases related to animals and birds.

Eligibility and Admission Process


Students seeking admission to B.V.Sc course must pass the The All India Pre Veterinary Test.

It may vary, but, in general, the prospective students shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the B.V.Sc course and they must have completed a HSC (10+2, or high school) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics with at least 50% marks and the rank obtained in the entrance examination.

B.Pharma and D.Pharma

The course prepares eligible professionals for pharmaceutical industry. These professionals are in great demand in India and abroad. The monitoring work is being carried out by the Pharmacy Council of India.

Seats and Course Duration

The diploma courses are of 2 years duration while the degree courses are of 4½ years. There is a 6 month practical internship in all these courses.

Curriculum

The combination of biomedical and pharmaceutical science and clinical expertise in drug use in a pharmacy degree prepares pharmacy graduates for work in a variety of fields. Graduates work as pharmacists in the community or in hospitals. Many pharmacists are involved in clinical trials used to evaluate new drug products and in preparing documentation on the effectiveness and safety of new drugs (required for marketing approval)

B.O.T

Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (BOT) is a graduate degree course which is offered by different medical institutes of the country. The programme prepares professional therapists who help people with physical or mental disabilities in achieving maximum functioning and independence at home and at the workplace.

Seats and Course Duration

It is a 4 ½ year degree course, which includes 6 months of rotating internship.

Curriculum

Occupational therapy is the use of productive activity in the rehabilitation or treatment of physically or emotionally challenged people. It is the use of meaningful occupation to help people with difficulty in leading a healthy and balanced lifestyle. In a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy degree course, students are students learn about human growth and development with particular emphasis on the emotional, physical, psychological, cognitive, socio-cultural and environmental components of various illness and injuries.

Eligibility and Admission Process

It may vary, but, in general, the prospective students shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the BOT course, they must have completed a HSC (10+2, or high school) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

BMLT

The B.Sc. programme in Medical Laboratory Technology is offered by differed medical colleges/institutions across the country. The degree awarded is B.Sc.-M.L.T. The medical technologists are an integral part of the medical profession. These professionals get involved in practical and technical work to aid correct diagnosis and in the functioning of Biochemical Laboratories.

Seats and Course Duration

A course for Lab Technologist is of 4 years duration.

Curriculum


A Medical Laboratory Technologist conducts these tests by analyzing body fluids, tissues, blood typing, microorganism screening, chemical analyses, cell counts of human body etc. Medical Laboratory Technologists play important role in collecting the information, sampling, testing, reporting and documenting these investigations, determining the presence, extent or absence of disease and match it up with the required levels.

Medical technicians do routine laboratory testing manually according to instructions. They work under Technologists or supervisors. Technicians may prepare specimens and operate machines that automatically analyze samples. In addition to running tests, technicians set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges, microscopes etc. They also prepare standard solutions for use in the lab. This involves measuring and mixing the correct amount of various chemicals.

Eligibility and Admission Process

The basic eligibility criterion for Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects.

BPT

Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) is a graduate degree course offered by different medical colleges of the country. During the course, one learns the scientific procedures used in the treatment of a patient with disability, disease or injury to achieve and maintain functional rehabilitation. This programme also focuses on prevention of malfunction or deformity.

Curriculum

As physiotherapists can treat a wide range of disorders, they are highly in demand today making a career in physiotherapy very attractive. Hence, one can pursue various physiotherapy courses and also opt for specializations such as geriatrics, sports physical therapy, pediatrics, orthopedics and clinical electrophysiological and cardiopulmonary therapy.

B.Sc Nursing

The undergraduate programme in nursing helps the students learn about procedures used in Operation Theatre, Cardiac Care and surgery. In India, Nursing Council of India is the Governing body for this program.

Seats and Course Duration

The duration of B.Sc. Nursing course varies between 3 to 4 years.

Curriculum

The curriculum is specifically directed to the upgrading of critical thinking skills, competencies and standards required for practice of professional nursing and midwifery as envisaged in National Health Policy. The course is intended to enable the graduates:

• Assume responsibilities as professional competent nurses and midwives at basic level in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.

• Make independent decisions in nursing situations, protect the rights of and facilitate individuals and groups in pursuit of health, function in the hospital, community-nursing services, and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice. They are also expected to assume the role of teacher, supervisor, and manager in clinical/public health settings.

Eligibility and Admission Process

It may vary, but, in general, the prospective students shall complete the age of 17 years on or before 31st December of the year of admission to the Nursing course, they must have completed a HSC (10+2, or high school) with the Science stream, including the subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics with at least 50% marks and the rank obtained in the entrance examination.
