National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra - Introduction

National Institute of Technology, Kurukshetra (NIT-K) was set up in the year 1963 as one of the 17 Regional Engineering Colleges planned by the central government in association with the state governments across the country during 1959-1965. The NIT-K was known by the name of Regional Engineering College, Kurukshetra till 2002.

However in 2002, on the recommendations of a high power committee constituted in 1998 by Ministry of Human Resources and Development, it was given the name of National Institute of Technology and hence became popular with NIT, Kurukshetra. It was established with the same basic aim as other RECs were set up- to churn out a huge pool of talented engineering graduates in the country every year.

Besides changing its name, MHRD also increased its annual funding and gave it a status of Deemed University so that it can award its own degree to the students.

There are five hostels for the male students with a capacity of 250 students per hostel.A separate hostel with a limited capacity of 125 is available for female students. A 150 seater Post Graduate hostel was also being constructed. The Central Library is used by the under-graduate and post-graduate students, research scholars and staff of the College. NIT is well equipped with a Central Computer centre named as Centre for Computing and Networking.
