German Universities - Application & Admission
The eligibility criteria of Indian students for admission to different programs in Germany is given below:
To be eligible for studying in any higher education institution whether it is a University or at a Fachhochschule (University of Applied Science), applicants require :
a general higher education entrance qualification (Algemeine Hochschulreife or Abitur)
ORa subject-specific entrance qualification (fachgebundene Hochschulreife)
ORinstitution specific qualification (fachhochschulreife). As a rule, entrance qualification is earned through graduation from a senior technical school (Fachoberschule), which is possible after a total of twelve years of school.
For Postgraduate Students- Graduation from India
- However, not all foreign academic degrees qualify for postgraduate studies and Bachelor’s degrees are sometimes treated as an intermediate qualification in Germany known as Zwischenprüfung or Vorprüfung. Before you apply for admission to a postgraduate programme (for example a Master's or Diplom), please find out how you will be placed in the corresponding programme.
For Doctoral ProgramFinding an academic supervisor: Before you apply for admission to a doctoral or PhD programme, it is important for you to find a suitable academic supervisor for your dissertation. Only professors (university teachers) are allowed to supervise dissertations.
Applicants from non-EU countries (third countries) and stateless persons:
In general, the International Office or the student registration office (Studierendensekretariat) at your chosen university or uni-assist will check whether your higher education entrance qualification qualifies you for admission to studies in Germany. If your certificate is not recognised as equivalent, you must take an assessment test called Feststellungsprüfung.
How to apply:
If you wish to apply to a German university, you can apply either directly to the university or through uni-assist. For the list of uni-assist member universities, see below. Following documents are required for application in German universities:
- Application Form for Admission to Studies: You can obtain the application forms from the university of your choice (via the International Office). In addition, you can obtain from the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) website
- Secondary school leaving certificate that provides you to enter higher education in India (for example, CBSE, ISC, State Boards, Baccalaureat, A-Levels, High School Diploma) plus the relevant list(s) of individual grades scored like a transcript of records.
- University certificates or degrees of exams passed in India and grades per academic semester or academic year
- Proof of German language proficiency (for example, a TestDaF or DSH certificate). This is not necessary for international programs conducted in English.
- Passport photo (format: 4 x 5 cm maximum)
- Three to five International Reply Coupons (Coupon-Réponse International)
- Copy of your passport (page with name details and photo)
- Proof of any subject-related vocational training or any aptitude tests passed. This is required especially for admission in Colleges of Arts or Music.
