The process includes having a professor recommend you profile. You should keep in mind that your your area of interest should be in line with the professor’s field of research. The candidates for a PhD are considered only if the department is willing to fund them. So, you should highlight your strong areas, and should align them with those of the university.
Apart from this, the other documents required for applying to a US university for a PhD program are mentioned below:
- Your GRE (Graduate Record Examination), IELTS/TOEFL scorecards.
- Your official transcripts, that mentions your academic record. The transcript is 'official' because, it is sent directly from your college or university to the graduate admissions office and it bears the official college or university stamp, signifying its validity.
- Getting the reference letters from the professors, employers.
- Preparing a statement of purpose that highlights your individuality, the purpose of choosing the particular field of research and a particular university.
- A mention of your Research work/ paper (if any).
- Resume, though not mandatory, must state the experience in the related field and the work experience if any.

Respected sir/madam, i have completed b.sc nursing with 1st division in sept.2010. i have 1year 6 months experience in clinical area.My IELTS overall score is 6band overall. Hello Girishkumar,First you have to take TOEFL. Then appear for SAT. 89 is the minimum requirement in TOEFL. Try to get at least 1700 in SAT to qualify for good US university. Gather letter of recommendation from your school. Your essay should be touching. Extra curricular activity certificates should be attached with your application form.
