The Institute is housed in the Central Institutes of Technology (CIT) Campus. The quiet surroundings and a commitment to a green environment make IMSc a haven for scholarly pursuits.

Situated in the Adyar-Taramani area of Chennai, the institute enjoys the conveniences of the metropolis and yet is withdrawn from the bustle of the city center. Two main buildings of the institute house the the lecture halls, faculty and administrative offices, the library etc.

A new, centrally air-conditioned office and lecture-hall complex houses academic members of IMSc. A 200 seat Ramanujan auditorium, is used for large scientific meetings while smaller lecture halls and classrooms accomodate more modest gatherings.

Most public areas in the Institute, including seminar and discussion rooms, lounges and the auditorium are Wi-Fi enabled.
