Career Option - 50-60% Marks in 12th Science


Are you over with your Class 12 board exams? Do you think you will score somewhere between 50% and 60% in science? Are you worried about the most important question – ‘what next’ because your scores might not leave you with too many options in this highly competitive world?

Whether you wish to change your stream, or you wish to make your career in science related field only, there are options for all! You just need to understand your aptitude, skills and interest. We at NNE have tried to give you some of the options that you can explore if you have scored between 50% and 60% in science stream.

BCA: If you want to churn your career in the field of computer applications and have a keen interest in computers, then you should go for Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA).

  • Course: Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA) is a three year degree course concentrating primarily on programming languages.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 in any stream with Mathematics and English as core subjects.Entrance tests are conducted in individual colleges for admission to BCA.You can further your career and do a MCA after your BCA to be at par with BTech degree holders. For details, Click Here.

BSc: If you are deeply interested in Science, you can pursue a Bachelors in Science Pass program. You can also apply for BSc (Hons) like Botany, Zoology and Chemistry as cut-offs vary from year to year and if you have a 60% you can get through some of the colleges like Acharya Narendra Dev College, Deen Dayal Updahyay College and Kalindi College all under Delhi University.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 in Science stream.For BSc (Pass) the subjects that you can opt for are Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Life Sciences and Environmental Studies. Most colleges across India offer this program.
  • Scope:  A BSc degree will give you scope to join a B Ed course later which will help you pursue a teaching profession. While doing your BSc, you can also pursue a computer course from some of the private institutes like NIIT or APTECH. Simultaneously, you can also prepare for engineering entrance exams for admission to B.Tech and MBBS programs the following year. For details on science stream, Click Here.

BBA: Did you know that even if you come from the science stream, you can pursue a Bachelor in Business of Bachelor Admission (BBA), if you have Mathematics and English as core subjects?

  • Course: It is a three year degree course which is designed to impart management education and inculcate entrepreneurship skills in a student.
  • Eligibility: 10+2 from any stream with Mathematics and English as core subjects and a minimum aggregate of 50%. You need to sit for entrance exams conducted by different colleges offering BBA program. For details on career in Business Management, Click Here.

B.Com: If you feel science is no longer your cup of tea and wish to do something else, you can also do a BCom Pass from any university.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 from any stream. You can do a BCom Pass and can pursue a professional course like CA, CS or ICWA. Alternatively, you can also enroll for a computer course and equip yourself with programming skills. For details on commerce as a career, Click Here.

B.Tech/BE: Engineering is one of the sought after careers in India today. Even if you have scored something between 50% and 60%, engineering is still a lucrative option for you. You can appear for all the engineering entrance exams both state level and at the national level for admission to BTech programs.

National level exams include IIT-JEE, AIEEE, and NATA. Institutes like BITS Pilani, BIT Ranchi, NITIE Mumbai also conduct entrance exams for admission to various engineering programs.
  • Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects. Click Here for details on Engineering programs.
B.Arch: If you feel that you have a great imagination, ability to visualize things and you are good at drawing, you can pursue a course in architecture. Bachelor in Architecture is a 5 year long undergraduate course.
  • Eligibility: For admission to most architectural colleges, the eligibility is 50 percent marks in HSC or equivalent, with physics, chemistry and maths as compulsory subjects but you need to clear the entrance exam as well. Examinations like AIEEE (All Indian Engineering Entrance Examination) and NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) apart from university level exams are conducted for admission to the B.Arch program. MBBS: If life sciences and study of the human body interests you, then MBBS is definitely one of the best options for you. You can pursue a degree in medicine to become a qualified doctor.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with Biology or Life Sciences as one of the core subjects. You have to appear for entrance exams for admission to MBBS programs in medicine colleges across India. BAMS: Have you thought of pursuing a course in Ayurvedic medicine? If you have passed your 10+2 in science, then Bachelor in Ayurvedic Medicine or BAMS is one of the options that you can choose as your career. Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest forms of medicine practiced in India and is gaining lot of popularity both in India and abroad.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with Science (Physics, Chemistry & Biology) with 50% or more in aggregate. You have to appear for entrance exams held by different universities for admission to BAMS. For details on BAMS, Click Here.

BSC Nursing: Do you have patience? Do you believe in hard work? Are you organized and good in multi-tasking? Then, BSc Nursing would be a good option for you. It provides basic knowledge about nursing, first-aid and midwifery. You will be trained in all the theoretical as well as practical aspects of nursing. After completing the course you can join health institutes, medical colleges or private nursing homes as trained and certified nurses.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Some colleges hold entrance exams for admission to BSc Nursing courses. For details on Nursing, Click Here.

BSc Anthropology: Have you ever thought about studying the socio-cultural development of humans? Armed with a science background you can pursue a course in anthropology which traces the biological and the socio-cultural evolution of humans right from their origin.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with Biology as one of your core subjects. After completing your higher studies in anthropology, you can work as a curator, urban planner, tour guide, culture resource manager or work as a research scholar. International organizations like UNESCO, WHO and UNICEF also look for people with anthropology background. B Pharma: B Pharma is one of the important options for students who have done 10+2 in science. B Pharma is usually a 4 years degree course and students who complete B Pharma can register themselves as pharmacist.

After completing the course, you can work as pharmacist, drug inspector, drug therapist, health inspector, or as a drug technician.
  • Eligibility: 10+2 examination with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Biology as core subjects. Some of the important institutes offering courses in B Pharma are Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Science & Research, Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi, Jadavpur University, and College of Pharmacy Science, Mohud, Berhampur. BSc Occupational Therapy: If you love handling machines and equipments, if you have a logical and a scientific bent of mind, another relatively new option that you can explore is BSc Occupational Therapy (BOT). You can work with patients who suffer from orthopedic, neurological and psychological/psychiatric disorders.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 with PCB (physics, chemistry and biology).Some of the colleges offering BOT are Christian Medical College, Vellore, All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mumbai, College of Allied Health Sciences, and Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal. BSc Physical Therapy: Bachelor of Physiotherapy (B.P.T) prepares a student for the practice of physiotherapy. The program is designed to integrate cognitive, psychomotor and interpersonal skills important to the development of a competent clinician.

  • Eligibility: 10+2 or equivalent thereto, with 50% or more marks in the aggregate of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English Core. Some of the institutes offering these courses are Amar Jyoti Institute of Physiotherapy and Pt. Deen Dayal Institute - Physically Handicapped. BA English: If you have always loved English Literature and Hamlet or Macbeth has fascinated you or you are transported to a the world ‘of golden daffodils’  then you can opt for English Hons, even if you've pursued science in 10+2.

  • Eligibility: Most colleges hold entrance examinations for admission to BA English Hons course. A degree in English will open up opportunities of a teacher, lecturer and even that of a journalist.

Mass Communication/Journalism: If you have a flair for writing and do not wish to continue with commerce any longer, then a course in mass communication would be just the right one for you. A mass communication degree from any reputed and recognized institute will enable you to achieve your goal. You can specialize in print journalism, advertising, radio journalism or television journalism. You can work as a reporter, copyeditor, editor, producer or journalist.

  • Eligibility: A student should have passed 10+2 from any stream. Entrance tests are conducted for admission to Mass Communication program in any institute or college of repute. Distance Learning Programs: Distance Learning Programs are getting immense popularity among students in India. It helps an individual to pursue a course of his or her choice and at the same time can concentrate on other professional courses. As a commerce student, you can pursue your BCom through distance learning and pursue professional courses like CA, ICWA or CS.

You can also pursue a part-time job and get the much needed experience in your field. The Open Universities located in the different states in India offer distance learning programs to students all over the country.     HELLO SIR, I HAVE PASSED 12TH WITH 55%IN 2012. I WANT TO GO FOR MBBS ,BUT NOW I AM WAITING FOR MHT-CET RESULT.IF I WOULD NOT BE ELIGIBLE THEN ,I WANT TO ABOUT VARIOUS BEST COURSES IN BIOLOGY,AND I AM VERY INTRESTED IN BIOLOGY.PLZ REPLY SOON.

    I live in kolkata. I ranked 70000 in wbjee, and 12000 in wbjexpo, my HS results will be declared on 28th may2012,kindly guide me what career shall i choose in kolkata or outside kolkata interested in to go for engg. or academics in science.
