A student who has slight interest in technical and IT areas is confused about what to opt between Bachelor in Computer Applications (BCA) or Bachelor in Technology (B.Tech). Though the two aren’t really comparable as one is an engineering course and the other is a degree course, yet with the growing demand of BCA and the increase in private engineering institutes, students do come up with queries like should they do BCA or B Tech. We at NNE have tried our best to clear the doubts of such students by doing a comparative study of the two.
What is BCA
Bachelor of Computer Applications or BCA is a three year degree course taught in several institutes and universities across India. A typical BCA course deals with software design and data base management and working with multiple data in the computer. BCA deals with subjects like C, C languages, Data Base Management, Logical Analysis, Operating Systems, Software Engineering and Client Server Technology.
Scope: A BCA program is the first important step for higher studies especially MCA. It prepares a student for IT and other professions either directly related or after higher studies. BCA provides a student with the much needed exposure of Computer Language applications and prepares a student for a Masters program in Computer Applications (MCA).
Job Prospects: BCA gives a student with a solid platform to further his career in the field of technology but it is strongly recommended that a student should opt for MCA to further his prospects in this competitive world. BCA is a good course but it is simply a bachelor’s level degree and not much importance is given by both private and government organizations especially when compared to a B.Tech course. Therefore one should join MCA after BCA which will improve a student’s prospects immensely and companies also attach the same weightage as a B.Tech degree holder.
After completing BCA students can start as Junior Programmer or a Software Tester and then move higher up the ranks and attain the role of a Senior Programmer. IT industry is booming in India and even in times of global recession, the Indian scene was relatively stable.
Eligibility: A student from any stream can apply for a BCA course provided he or she has Mathematics and English at the 10 2 level with an average of 50% marks.
B.Tech (IT/CSE)
Bachelor in Technology or B Tech is one of the most sought after courses in India today. It is a 4 year professional degree level course that equips a student with engineering skills in different sectors like Information Technology (IT), Electronics, Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil to name only a few.
The professional B Tech program consists of theoretical concepts and practical experience. The first two semesters are common across all branches and then the students move on to do their area of specialization.
B Tech in Information Technology deals with subjects like Programming languages, Digital and Analog electronics, DBMS (database management systems, networking and telecommunications.
Scope: Most students after completing their 10 2 in science stream opt for engineering as their preferred career. Good quality engineers are always in great demand in the fast growing Indian economy and IT industry.
Students completing B Tech in Information Technology from any of the reputed institutes in India like the IITs are always in huge demand in India and abroad.
Job Prospects: IT and Computer Engineers who have completed their B Tech program are not only in great demand in IT industries but in sectors like banks, airlines, and manufacturing industry. India is the main outsourcing hub for international projects from the US or the UK.
Good quality computer engineers are therefore recruited in great numbers by multi-national companies both in India and abroad. You can get jobs as graduate engineer trainee, junior software engineers/programmers and software trainee engineers. B.Tech students with good academic records may also get hired as research analysts.
Eligibility: Students having passed 10 2 in science with minimum 50% marks are eligible to appear for Joint Entrance Examination for admission to engineering courses in IITs, NITs and other engineering institutes.
Difference Between BCA and B Tech
Bachelor of Computer Applications is a three years bachelor’s course taught in colleges across universities in India and to be at par with B Tech, you need to supplement it with an MCA course which is again a 3 years masters program. In other words, you have to study for 6 years to be at the same level of a B Tech student.
Companies give more credit to students who have an engineering degree (B Tech) than students who have simply done their BCA. However, students armed with an MCA degree can expect a high salary band.
B.Tech is a much advanced and comprehensive course compared to BCA. B Tech deals much more about the technical aspects and develops the engineer in you while BCA is a degree providing a base for higher studies.
| B.Tech | BCA |
| It is a four year professional course for students aspiring to be engineers | It is a three year degree course on various aspects of computer programming and languages.
|
| Rated highly by both private and government organisations | BCA graduates are recruited by firms but salary band is not that high and can hope for a better job only after completing MCA |
| Comprehensive course with well balanced curriculum on theoretical aspects and practical knowledge | BCA degree is good for furthering higher studies though fair bit of practical exposure is also given |
| Core level of study includes digital electronics, Microprocessor and its programming, apart from software languages. | The curriculum revolves around software languages only.
|
| Students from science background can only opt for B Tech Program | Students from any background provided they have Mathematics and English as core subjects can apply for a BCA program
