Fashion Designing and Fashion Technology/Apparel Production are two most exciting and sought after courses after Class 12. Though Fashion Designing is the popular of the two, a degree in fashion technology or garment production is fast gaining popularity.
You are interested in fashion designing, but you feel the field is a little too saturated and you wish to explore opportunities related to fashion designing but maybe not exactly fashion designing, then you must explore a course in Fashion Technology.
Fashion Technology
If you have a technical bent of mind along with creative prowess, then Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech) would be just the right choice for you. Bachelor of Fashion Technology is a very specialized course and offered only in very few institutes across India.
Some institutes like the Pearl Academy offers a course in Garment Manufacturing but it is offered at the postgraduate level. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) provides a four year course leading to B. F. Tech (Apparel Production) at the undergraduate level.
This course is designed to train students in the core garment manufacturing technology with emphasis on best practices in Apparel Production. Students are trained on application of Information Technology program so that they can contribute significantly in the fashion technology domain.
Eligibility: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics
Scope: The course provides hands on experience on apparel manufacturing technology with exposure in hands-on training and industry exposure. At the end of the course you can expected to be hired by fashion house, and garment manufacturing unit. You can work in the capacity of Production Managers or Assistant Production Managers in garment manufacturing units.
Fashion DesigningFashion designing is one of the most sought after courses today in India. Fashion designers not only create new styles for garments and accessories but also try to adapt styles to suit the local flavour.
It is very important to know your skill and aptitude before you can choose an area of specialization like Fashion Design, Leather Design, Accessory Design, Textile Design, Knitwear Design or even Fashion Communication.
Eligibility: 10+2 from any stream. All you need is a creative bent of mind with a bit of artistic skills. Having a keen sense of colour would be an added advantage. Admission is done through entrance exams held at various fashion institutes like National Institute of Fashion Technology, Apeejay Institute of Design, National Institute of Design, Pearl Academy of Fashion and Wigan and Leigh College.
Scope and Employment Opportunities: Fashion Designing gives you that opportunity to be your own boss. You can train and work under some well-known designer and gain that much needed experience and get relevant exposure in the fashion industry before setting up your own boutique. You can even freelance for fashion houses. Alternatively, you can find employment in export house and garment manufacturing unit.
