Fashion design and technology
Fashion designing and fashion technology/apparel production are two extremely exciting and sought-after courses after Class 12. Though fashion designing is the more popular of the two courses, a degree in fashion technology or garment production is fast gaining popularity, thanks to an increasing need for technical know-how.

If you are interested in a career in fashion designing, but you feel the field is a little too saturated and you wish to explore career opportunities related to fashion designing, then you must explore a course in fashion technology.

Fashion Technology

Technical and creative prowess are paramount to pursue a degree in Fashion Technology, a course offered at very few Indian Institutes. These include the Pearl Academy (Garment manufacturing at the post-graduate level), National Institute of Fashion Technology (a four year B. FTech in Apparel Production). A course in fashion technology focuses on fabric types and their suitability to the climate, the occasion, wearability, etc. Students are taught to study fabric and choose the correct fabric for the product being designed.

Eligibility:

10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics



Scope and Career Opportunities

Largely a practical and hands-on course, the subject preps graduates so that they can expect to be picked up for the post of production managers or assistant production managers by fashion houses or garment manufacturers directly.

Fashion Designing

Highly sought after, fashion designing is all about knowing what the market wants before they know it and then delivering it. Related fields include:

  • Leather Design

  • Accessory Design

  • Textile Design

  • Knitwear Design 

  • Fashion Communication

Eligibility:

While some students branch out into full-fledged career with formal training, we would suggest professional studies to be truly successful. Students have finished their 10+2 from any stream are eligible. Candidates need is a creative bent of mind with some artistic skills. Having a keen sense of colour is considered an added advantage. Admission is done through entrance exams held at various fashion institutes like National Institute of Fashion Technology, Apeejay Institute of Design, National Institute of Design, Pearl Academy of Fashion and Wigan and Leigh College.

Scope and Career Opportunities:

Fashion designing gives you the opportunity to be your own boss. You can train and work under well-known designers and gain that much-needed experience and relevant exposure before setting up your own label. You can even freelance for fashion houses. Alternatively, you can find employment in an export house or a garment manufacturing unit.
