Introduction

Electronics Engineering is one of the largest and most sophisticated branches of engineering. Its application is so wide that it affects our daily lives in various ways. Electronics has not only made our life easier but enjoyable too. It has provided to us the equipments like Television, Radio, computers and telephones etc. The technology of electronics and telecommunication helps us to see, hear and communicate over vast distances and do things faster. Electronics has a major role in improving productivity in industries like oil, energy, agriculture and so many other important sectors of economy.

An electronics engineer works in group to design, fabricate,  produce, test and supervise the manufacturing of complex products and systems i.e. electronic equipments and components for a number of industries including hospitals, computer industies, electronic data processing systems for communication and in defense etc. They supervise production and manufacturing processes and oversee installation and maintenance. Electronics engineers work with devices that use extremely small amounts of power. They work with microprocessors, fibre optics, and in telecommunication, television, radio etc. 

Electronics engineering is a rapidly growing sector where there is excellent job opportunity for the skilled professionals. Individuals with zeal to learn and having creative and inventive mind will probably find electronics engineering a challenging and lucrative career.

Courses & Eligibility

An aspirant of Electronics Engineering (or Telecommunication engineering) must start his/her academic career in Science at intermediate level i.e. plus two (with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics). After completion of class 12th or plus two in science stream he/she has to sit for entrance examinations conducted both at national and state level (e.g. IITJEE, AIEEE, BITSAT etc.). After qualifying the entrance exam he/she would take up BE/BTech in Electronics engineering which is of four years duration.

One can also go for Diploma program after completion of his/her class 10th. Here he/she will be recognized with the status of a junior engineer.

One, who still wants to study further after completing BE/BTech, can pursue MTech program offered by Indian Institutes of Technology and few other engineering colleges/universities in the country.

Individuals with interests in research areas can pursue PhD after his/her post graduation studies for carrying out research works.

The Institution of Engineers (India) also offers course in mechanical engineering which is equivalent to BE/BTech offered by other institutes/universities.

Career Prospects

Electronics and Telecommunication engineering is the most sought after career option for engineering aspirants. Fresh graduates of electronics and telecommunication engineering find quite good jobs in electronics and telecommunication sectors.

An electronics engineer can get a job in Central Government, State Governments and their sponsored corporations in public enterprises like All India Radio, Indian Telephone Industries, MTNL, National Physical Laboratories, Civil Aviation Department; Post and Telegraph Department, Co-ordination Department, Bharat Electronics Limited and few other government undertakings.

The private companies offer excellent pay-packages to skilled and experienced electronics professionals. The private units dealing with manufacture, sales and services of electronics consumer goods require large number of electronics professionals for their functioning.

Apart from making professional career, one can also do research work in this field by joining PhD programs offered by several institutions across the globe. Teaching career is also rewarding. One can join engineering colleges/universities as a full time or part time lecturer/professor.

Pay-Package

The salary of an electronics engineer depends on the type of employer – public or private. Generally private firms offer quite good salary as compared to government establishements. Working experience, qualifications, ability are important factors in determining the pay level. In India, a fresh pass-out from an average engineering college can expect starting monthly salary somewhere between Rs.10, 000 – Rs.15, 000. With having 1-2 years of industrial experience, the salary may go up to Rs. 35, 000 per month.

BE/BTech courses in Electronics and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering are offered by almost all engineering colleges/technological universities including the IITs and NITs.
