Introduction
Each and every culture and civilization has its own history. This history is often is not clearly known to their people, Archeology as a field of study refers to the scientific and orderly study of the life and culture of past generations; it mainly takes into account various seals, inscriptions, monuments, edifices and other related materials which over the decades, have been buried in the past.
In fact, the scope of Archaeology is very broad. It has various field of study like archives, museology, numismatics, epigraphy and the like.
Archaeologist carry out various tasks like initial fieldwork, excavation of sites and their categorization besides dating and interpretation of excavated materials. Archaeologists manly try to find out the famous four Ws (What, When, Why, Where and How) with respect to the formation of past cultures and civilizations.
They also try to figure out the reasons behind major changes that have occurred in certain traditions and societies. Under this, they try to figure out the reasons why ancient man gradually stopped hunting and started farming and what may have prompted them to build cities and trade channels. Another key- area of their research is related to the reasons behind the fall of such early civilizations as the Harappan Civilisation in the Indian Subcontinent and the Roman civilization of Europe and the like.
Archaeological research is the chief method available for learning about history and past societies. The field is now expanding and establishing its roots in different corporate bodies, too. This trend makes Archeology as a rewarding and the same time, a very challenging career opportunity. Even aspiring students with arts can also apply to pursue a course in Archeology. Generally a Science background at the +2 level is preferred for a B.Sc. programme in Archeology. B.Sc in Archeology is of three years duration and thereafter one can specialize in any of the branches at M.Sc and M.Phil levels. A candidate, who plans to join international development agencies as an advisor, should preferably have a Ph.D. degree in the subject.
There are three main areas of employment for an Archaeologist, i.e., teaching, research and working in museums. Research jobs are available in organizations like Archaeological Survey of India, the Planning Commission as well as international organizations like the United Nation's UNESCO or UNICEF also require their services.
Moreover, openings are also available for socio-cultural Archaeologists with Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) who seek their expertise in understanding of relations between industry and society.
Cultural Archaeologists are particularly well suited to work in professions involving people, such as teaching, law, medicine, social work, and journalism. Archaeology majors may become cultural resource management specialists.
Museums are yet another potent source of employment. Many organizations like the ICMR, WHO and the Police Department also offer employment to Archaeologists for the purpose of crime detection.
A section of the students may possibly opt for archaeologically oriented research to provide better service delivery or to assess social issues and social problems, such as in public health, education, urban planning, social welfare, and government planning, international development.
Since the nature of job prospects is very diverse, the salary can vary tremendously. Though, initially pay packet in this field of work is not as lucrative as other hot professions, but there is a tremendous amount of satisfaction associated with this profession. One can expect a starting salary somewhere around Rs. 8,000-12000 per month. There also exists a stiff competition among researchers working in the field of Archeology for grant of money from national and international funding agencies. Hence aspirants who wish to carryout research in Archeology must be well prepared.
