The very word Private detective conjures up before one's eyes images of a toughened, enigmatic but intelligent individual (often wearing dark glasses) who goes about trapping culprits and cracking the toughest of cases before people like you and me can say Jack Robinson.

Perhaps the most famous detective ever known in the world is Sherlock Holmes, resident of 221 Baker Street London, the brainchild of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the legendary English author. Holmes' overall appearance and personality - the opium pipe, the magnifying glass, the cane and not forgetting the deerstalker's cap, coupled with his famous oft quoted line "Elementary my dear Watson" (addressed to his friend-cum-secretary, Dr Watson), have become immortal for all lovers of English literature.

None other than Monsieur Hercules Poirot occupies the second place in the Hall of Fame. Brought to life by Dame Agatha Christie O.B.E, the elderly but sprightly Flemish (Belgian) gentleman, with an egg shaped bald had and well-oiled moustache, whose catch lines are mais-oui and toute de m^eme, may not match Holmes in his scientific approach, but one never ceases to marvel at his power of reasoning and logical deductions.

Scopes for private detectives in India have increased over the last few years. Threats to life, escalating public violence, mushrooming mafia strongholds, and political and domestic violence have heightened the need for the services of security providers and private investigators. An alternative career that is as interesting as it is challenging.

This may be a tough career option but young individual who has the potential and courage to fight against the crimes can definitely find it as one of the satisfying professions in today’s’ rapidly growing criminal conspiracy and litigation. The profession is not restricted to young individual; however, retired armed personnel find it an apt post retirement profession to dabble in.

Sleuthing or investigation is a high-powered business. Private sleuths are employed for various under cover activities, from tracking an errant husband to corporate or business associates, unearthing murky secrets of organizations, tracing missing people, solving political imbroglios, and even verifying the credentials of prospective marriage partners!

The act of investigation and detective services have begun to emerge as support services to the law and order enforcement agencies of the country. They not only lighten the burden of these agencies but also strive to address the issue of civilian security adequately.
