Industrial and Production Engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with the study of developing, improving, implementing and evaluating the integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information, equipment, energy, material and the industrial process as a whole.

Industrial Engineering can also be termed as Production Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering as well depending on the opinion or motives of the user.

Production or Industrial Engineers work includes designing the production process for a product and also planning, measuring and controlling all activities within the organization.

An Industrial or Production Engineer is responsible for the overall industrial production and management. He is moreover involved with the human and organizational aspects of developing the desired system.

Eligibility Criteria

  1. Science at intermediate level is mandatory i.e. 10+2 (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics).

  2. After completion of class 12th in science he/she has to give an entrance examination conducted both at national and state level (e.g. IITJEE, AIEEE, BITSAT etc.).

  3. For pursuing M.Tech, the candidate needs to qualify for GATE.

  4. Individuals with interests in research and development can take up the PhD program after their post graduation.

  1. There are several job opportunities for Industrial and Production Engineers in Manufacturing companies.

  2. Other organizations like banks, hospitals, finance, agriculture, wholesale and retail trade, transportation and construction also hire engineers of this field.

  3. Public and Private sectors hire industrial and production engineers for Instrumental Manufacturing Industries and Industrial Automation Units.

  4. Plant engineers, manufacturing engineers, quality engineers, process engineers and industrial managers are some of the other sectors in which an industrial and production engineer may work.

  5. Recruitment in government sector is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) which holds Engineering Services Examinations every year to appoint engineers in its various Central services.

  6. Railways, Armed Forces and other Government departments is also a field to explore for these engineers.

Salary Package

An average salary of an Industrial and Production Engineer is Rs. 2.65 lakh per year. Again, depending on the performance and experience of the person, the salary will amount to much more than the starting salary.

Having said that, the compensation for a Industrial and Production Engineer is on the higher side internationally. Engineers from top engineering colleges and institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Birla Institute of Technology get more compensation as compared to engineers from other universities and colleges.
