Geology is the study of the Earth's origin, history and composition etc. Its sub-branches are mineralogy, structural geology, geomorphology, planetology and geological engineering etc. A person who carries out these studies is known as geologist.
The roles of geologists are very vital while exploring mineral wealth and natural resources. The geologists also determine conditions suitable for constructing railway lines, roads, bridges, buildings etc. Geologists explore under-water resources and gas fields deep in the sea. They conduct tests to measure quality of soil by conducting geo-physical and geo-chemical tests.
One can take geology as a career option at undergraduate level. An honours in the field at undergraduate level can help pursue master program in the branch. The minimum educational qualification in this case is 10+2 Science (or class 12th).
In India there are several bachelor’s and masters programs available in geology and applied geology. One can also opt for MTech or PhD in the field after MSc or BE (Bachelor of Engineering). Please see the list of universities/institutes offering courses in geology.
The various courses offered by Indian universities/institutes are:
• B.Sc. (Hons.) with Geology (at undergraduate level) • M.Sc. (Geology) • M. Sc. (Applied Geology) • M.Sc. (Tech.) in Applied Geology • M.Tech (Geology) • MPhil (Geology) • PhD
Making career in Geology is challenging as well as rewarding. There are large employment opportunities for Geographers/ Meteorologists/ Oceanographers in both public and private sectors.
The Union Public Service Commission conducts tests for placements in Central Government Agencies like the Geological Survey of India and the Central Ground water Board. Similarly, Coal India, Mineral Exploration Authority, Oil & Natural Gas Corporation, Hindustan Zinc and several other organisations engaged in mineral explorations utilize the services of Geologists.
The Defence and Para-military forces also utilize the services of Geologists. A person, having background of geology can also be absorbed as an Environmental Scientist, Geodesist, Geographer, Geologist, Geophysicist, Hydrographer, Oceanographer or mining engineer at various organization in India and abroad.
The salary of a Geologist depends on his qualification and experience. The Indian Government offers handsome salary to qualified geologists. The average salary varies between Rs 15, 000 – 25, 000.
