Special Class Railway Apprentices' (SCRA) Examination 2015

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), New Delhi conducts the Special Class Railway Apprentices’ examination (SCRA) to select candidates for the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Indian Railways. This is a class-I service and these officials constitute the top rung cadre of the mechanical wing of the Indian Railways.

The SCRA exam has provided Indian Railways with its top-ranking officers. The Special Class Railway Apprentices' (SCRA) are the candidates that are selected by the UPSC through the SCRA exam. They get admitted to the undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE), Jamalpur. This programme was started in 1927 and is one of the oldest in India.

The IRIMEE has a Memorandum of Understanding with BIT, Mesra, Ranchi. The semester system of BIT, Mesra is followed, with workshop training sessions during the holidays at BIT, Mesra. The apprentices get a monthly stipend of Rs. 9100 for the first two years, Rs. 9400 for the next 1.5 years and Rs. 9700 for the last six months.

After successfully completing four years of training, the SCRAs join the Indian Railways as Indian Railway Services of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME) Officers (on probation for 1.5 years.)

SCRA 2015 exam pattern & syllabus
