Bangalore University was established in July 1964 as an outcome of the University of Mysore with an aim to include institutions of higher education in the metropolitan city Bangalore and rural Kolar district.
After the establishment of the University, it introduced Honours courses in the year 1956-66. Since its inception, Bangalore University has included a large number of affiliated colleges, P.G. research centres and multi-programme selection system.
In compliance with this expanded limits, the University moved into a campus’ Jnana Bharati’(JB) which is extended in the area of 1,100 acres of land. At present, the JB Campus houses the administrative office a large number of post-graduate departments, Directorates, Centres of higher learning, Gandhi Bhavan, Ambedkar Bhavan, NSS Bhavan, Outdoor Stadium and other support services.
Bangalore University has completed forty one years of its productive existence and is now regarded as one of the largest Universities of Asia. NAAC has been accredited it with five stars status in the year of 2001.
The University is being categorized into six faculties namely Arts, Science, Commerce and Management, Eduaction, Law and Engineering. Besides, it has 41 post-graduate departments and offers 51 post-graduate courses.
Directorate of Correspondence Courses & Distance Education
The Bangalore University established the Directorate of Correspondence Courses and Distance education in 1976. Initially it was offering only few external courses. But with the passing time it developed and included both correspondence courses and Open University schemes. With the initiation of these courses, it started offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses, postgraduate diplomas and certificate courses.
In addition to these, the Directorate being collaborated with M/s. APTECH Ltd also
offers a three-year Bachelor of Computer Applications course in the distance education mode.
The Directorate is making all efforts to meet all the requirements of distance education and to democratize higher education. Thus, the Directorate is catering to the public who could not pursue their studies in regular courses, under two schemes - Correspondence Scheme and Distance Education Scheme.
