India has home to some of best government engineering institutes that offer both UG/PG courses. Besides the metropolitan cities, the government engineering colleges in India are located in other cities like Pune, Bhopal, Nagpur, Jalandhar, Indore and Allahabad among others. Students can opt for government engineering colleges or privately owned institutes depending upon their choice.

Most of the government engineering colleges in India have a consistent method of selection.

For example admission to the BTech. programs at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for Indian and Foreign nationals is on the basis of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) score.

The IITs are the top engineering colleges in India that play an important role in the development of technological manpower.Other engineering colleges in India have their own admission procedure.

These institutes have programs that are considered the best in the world. Another important engineering college is the Institute of Technology, BHU located in Varanasi. It is one of the oldest institutions dedicated to education in the different engineering streams. Other common entrance tests for admissions to the top engineering colleges in India include GATE, and JMET. The eligibility criterion for applying to the various engineering institutes in the country is that candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in science stream. The cutoff percentage for being eligible for admissions may vary from college to college.

The various engineering disciplines that students can opt for specialization include Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer, Biochemical, Chemical and Electrical Engineering. Some of the top engineering colleges in India like IIT, Delhi and others also offer short term courses on various subjects. The government engineering colleges in India also have very active placement cells that invite some of the top companies for recruitment at the campus.

The responsibility of successfully conducting these entrance examinations at different levels is jointly carried out by polytechnics, engineering colleges and universities in close cooperation with department of technical education and the designated government or other agencies.

The admission to these engineering education and training institutions is largely done on the basis of entrance examinations conducted by the entrance examination conducting board of the state, country or the respective institutes.
