The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad also known as IIM-A was established in December 1961 as an autonomous body with the active association of the Government of India, Government of Gujarat and the Indian Industry. Renowned Physicist Dr. Vikram Sarabhai played a pivotal role in setting up of IIM Ahmedabad. IIMA collaborated with Harvard Business School (HBS) United States (US) in its initial years that resulted in IIMA pioneering in the case method of research and teaching in India.
The IIM-A was founded by Dr Vikram Sarabhai and a few other public spirited industrialists who felt that agriculture, education, health, transportation, population control, energy and public administration were all vital elements in a growing society and that it was necessary to link these meaningfully with industry. It was due to their vision that IIM Ahmedabad in just four decades has evolved from being India’s premier management institute to a notable international school of management.
The IIM Ahmedabad offers master and PhD level programmes i.e. Two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Management (equivalent to MBA), Two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Agri-business Management (equivalent to MBA), Fellow Programme in Management (equivalent to Ph.D.), One-year Post-Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX, equivalent to MBA), One-year Post-Graduate Programme in Management in Public Management and Policy (PGP-PMP, equivalent to MBA).
IIM-A also offers courses in Doctoral Programme, Faculty Development Programme (FDP) designed for teachers, researchers and industrial organizations for enhancing their knowledge in management education. Management Development Programmes (MDPs) - Executive Education popular as the 3-Tier Programmes (3-TP), MDP for small and medium enterprises (SMEP) These MDPs are known as General Management Programmes (GMPs). IIMA even offers open enrollment programmes which are designed to address specialized needs in areas such as business policy, communications, economics, finance, marketing, organizational behaviour, personnel and industrial relations, production and quantitative methods, information systems, agriculture, public systems, health and education.
The IIM Ahmedabad admission is done through a two-stage process. In the first stage, the candidates appear for the Common Admission Test (CAT) exam. Based on the percentile obtained in the CAT exam IIMA gives a call to the candidate for personal interview. Case study is also conducted at IIMA to evaluate managerial abilities of the incumbent. According to the Economist survey of global B-schools, 2001, IIM Ahmedabad was rated as “The World's Toughest B-School to get into”. IIM Ahmedabad was ranked as the top business school in India according to the Business Today, B-School Rankings in 2007-08 and the ET B-school Survey 2007. Lakhs of students appear for the CAT exams every year to seek admission in IIM-A.
In the second stage, candidates get admissions to the post-graduate programmes after being scrutinized for their overall performance. In preparing this admission list, inputs such as performance in personal interview, the CAT score, academic background and achievements, extra-curricular activities and post-degree work experience are taken into consideration. Interested overseas candidates should apply with their valid GMAT scores.
IIM-Ahmedabad alumni network is one of the most powerful assets it has built up over the years. The IIM-A alumnus have established a niche for themselves not only in India but also in the entire world. The IIMA Alumni Association was formally developed in 1967 with a central executive committee and chapters in major cities in India as well as US, Singapore, UK, and Muscat. Anybody who has enrolled in the Institute’s PGP, FPM and MDPs can get a membership in the network. They organize educational and social activities like Management Awards and Seminars. The Annual Alumni Reunion has become an event all the members look forward to, held in the last week of December.
