The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an entrance examination and scholarship test held by the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and IISc Bangalore on the behalf of the National Coordination Board (Department of Higher Education, GATE, Government of India and the Ministry of Human Resource Development or MHRD). GATE 2013 is organized by IIT Bombay.

The GATE 2013 examination will identify candidates for admission to postgraduate programs in engineering, technology, architecture, science and related disciplines at the national level. On the basis of GATE scores, candidates may take admission into postgraduate engineering and sciences programs. The score may also be valid for admission to doctoral degree programs.

Non-GATE qualified candidates can apply for doctoral degree programs with the necessary postgraduate qualifications in engineering sciences. The MHRD offers scholarships and assistantships to GATE-qualified candidates. Many institutes and universities request the GATE Score for admission to fellowship and research programs.

GATE 2013 Online Application Process

The application for the test must be made through an online form. Provide an email address that you (only you) use, and receive GATE communications at this address. An email address can only be used once to register. Once you register, you will get an email with a link. Choose a password and fill out all the necessary information for the application. A photo and signature will need to be uploaded in addition to other information and documents. Once the application is submitted, you cannot add further changes.

The application gives two payment options, after submission you can finish online payment or complete the challan payment option. Download the finished application and print the ".pdf" file. If you are submitting a bank challan payment, you must download a page to take with you to the bank. Wait 48 hours after generating the .pdf, after this point you can take the completed challan to the bank. Payment will not be accepted before this point.

Mail the printed application form and necessary documents by speed post to the appropriate zonal office. Make sure to follow all instructions before sending the finished packet. The packet must reach the GATE office on or before 8 October 2012. You may also turn it in personally.

GATE 2013 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who possess one of the following may appear in GATE 2013:

• Bachelor's degree holders in engineering, technology, or architecture (4 years after 10+2)
• Master's degree holders in any branch of science, mathematics, statistics, computer applications or equivalent
• Candidates in the second or higher year of the four-year Integrated Master's degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in engineering/technology or in the third or higher year of five-year Integrated Master's degree programme and Dual Degree programme in engineering/technology
• Qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE/MHRS as equivalent to the Bachelor of Engineering of Bachelor of Technology. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

Candidates who are in the final year of the qualifying examination can also apply.

GATE 2013 Admit Card

Admit cards can only be downloaded online from the GATE Online Applicant Interface. Admit cards are no longer available by post. Bring your printed admit card with you to the test with valid photo identification.

One of the following is accepted as identification:

• Driving license
• Passport
• PAN Card
• Voter ID
• College ID
• Employee identification card
• Notarized affidavit with photo, signature, date of birth and residential address

Your photo identification must be original, photocopies are not accepted. You are not permitted to take the test without appropriate photo identification.

GATE 2013 Exam Pattern

Three hours are allocated for exam completion, which includes a total of 65 questions and 100 maximum marks. All questions are objective type.

Online papers: AE, AG, AR, BT, CE, CH, CY, GG, PH, MA, MN, MT, TF, XE, XL

Offline papers: CS, EC, EE, IN, PI, ME

Question Types

• Multiple choice questions
• Common data questions
• Linked answer questions
• Numerical answer questions (online exams only)
  

The test evaluates a few abilities, including comprehension, analysis and synthesis, recall and application of knowledge.

General Aptitude Questions

Specific exam sections vary according to the subject, though all papers contain General Aptitude (Language and Analytical Skills) items in addition to subject-specific questions.

XE Paper

• Section A: Engineering Mathematics (compulsory)
• General Aptitude (compulsory)
• Any two XE sections B to G

After looking at the questions, you may choose which optional sections to answer.

XL Paper

• Section H: Chemistry (compulsory)
• General Aptitude (compulsory)
• Any two XL sections I to M

After viewing the questions, two sections I to M can be chosen.

Marking Scheme

One third of a mark is deducted for incorrect answers on multiple choice questions worth one mark. Two-thirds of a mark are deducted for incorrect answers on multiple choice questions valued at two marks. For the linked answer question pair, each question is worth two marks. For wrong answers to the first question, 2/3 of a mark are deducted. The second question in the pair will not get a negative marking. When the first question in the pair is incorrect, the second question is not graded. Numerical answer type questions do not have negative markings.

GATE 2013 Score

GATE 2013 is held through the following 8 zones constituting IITs and IISc. The GATE score is valid for a duration of two years. Scores will be available on the GATE Online Applicant Website. This year, a new formula will be used to calculate the score.

GATE 2013 Results

GATE 2013 Results were announced on March 15, 2013 (10:00 Hrs). Score cards will also be mailed to candidates with marks equal to or above qualifying marks for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Physically Disabled (SC/ST/PD) candidates.
