The institute accepts the scores of following

- Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)

- Joint Admission Test to M.Sc.(JAM)
Joint Admission Test to M.Sc.(JAM) is conducted by the Indian Institute of Technologies – IITs for admission to Master of Science ( M.Sc.) and other post–B.Sc. programmes offered at the 7 different Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). In a given academic year, any one of the 7 IITs take the responsibility for the conduct of JAM test. For details, click here.
- Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is an All-India Examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT’s). Admission to ME and MTech programs largely depends upon GATE percentile score. For more details, click here.
- Quality Improvement Programme (QIP)
The Government of India has started Quality Improvement Programme - QIP in 1970. The programme is implemented and monitored by All India Council for Technical Education - AICTE, a statuary body of government of India. A number of short-term courses have also been organised by the QIP Centres for the benefit of the faculty members from engineering colleges. The courses have proved very popular and useful. Admission to Foreign NationalsThe IIT
Guwahati offers admission to foreign
candidates who are either sponsored or self financed. The
eligibility criteria for such candidates are same as that for Indian Nationals.
However the
application form is different.
The candidates can download application form from official website of
IIT Guwahati.
The institute issues admission notification
for admission into PhD programme during the month of September/October every
year.
PhDEligibility
- Full Time
candidates
PhD in Science
- Masters degree in the relevant discipline
with minimum of 60% marks or a C.P.I. of 6.5 or equivalent and a valid GATE
score or qualification in NET.
PhD in Engineering
- MTech degree or equivalent in relevant field with minimum 60% marks or CPI
of 6.5 OR
- BTech degree or equivalent in relevant field with minimum 75% marks or a CPI
of at least 8.00 and valid GATE score, OR
- BTech degree from an IIT in relevant field with a CPI of at least 8.0 and
with or without a GATE score.
PhD in Biotechnology
- MTech in Biotechnology/ Biochemical Engg./Chemical Engg. or related
disciplines or MPharm with minimum 60% marks or CPI of 6.5 OR
- BTech in Biotechnology/ Biochemical Engg./Chemical Engg. or related
disciplines or BPharm, with minimum 75% marks or 8.00 CPI and with a valid GATE
score
- MSc in Biotechnology/Molecular Biology/ Biochemistry/Microbiology/Life
Sciences/ Agricultural Sciences/Chemistry/ related disciplines with minimum 60%
marks or CPI of 6.5 and a valid qualification of GATE/NET/equivalent test
conducted by ICAR/ICMR.
PhD in Environment
- MTech/BTech in Environmental / Chemical /Civil Engg, Biotechnology,
Atmospheric Sciences, Applied Mathematics), OR
- MSc (as in a) above) in Atmospheric Sciences with Mathematics, Statistics,
Applied Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry,
Biochemistry, Microbiology, OR
- M Des/M Arch with at least 60% marks or 6.5 CPI or or BDes/BArch of IITs
with at least 8.0 CPI OR
- for the area of Environmental Economics, MA/MSc in Economics with
Specialization in Econometrics/Environmental Economics with at least 55% marks
or equivalent with valid NET
PhD in Humanities & Social Sciences
- Masters Degree in the relevant discipline with a minimum of 55% marks or
equivalent, and a valid NET qualification.
- Sponsored, Self Financed, Part-Time (PhD &
M.Tech)
- Candidates, who possess any of the qualifications specified
for regular candidates with or without GATE / NET /
CEED scores may apply for admission as-
- sponsored candidates
- part-time candidates or
- self-financed (only in case of PhD) candidates.
- Candidates must have at least 2 years of professional experience in
the relevant field.
Waiver Relaxation in eligibility norms
- SC / ST / PH Category candidates will be given relaxation as per Government
of India norms.
- Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST
applicants for MTech
Financial
SupportThe
Indian Institute of
Technology Guwahati (IITG) offers financial support to students pursuing
PhD programme in any discipline of Sciences/Social Sciences/Engineering. The
financial support is meant only for Indian national. The assistance is as -
- Rs.8000 per month for students with BE/BTech/MSc or equivalent as entry
level qualification
- Rs.9500 per month for students with MTech/ME as entry level
qualification
Terms &
Conditions:
The terms and conditions for award of
scholarship/financial support is mentioned below-
- A student with BTech degree in
Engineering must have a valid GATE score at the time of admission (with
the exception of candidates with BTech degree from IITs with CPI 8 or above).
- Students with postgraduate degree in Science/Humanities must have a valid
GATE score or NET qualification (JRF or LS) for the award of Institute
fellowship.
- Students with fellowships tenable at the time of admission from CSIR/
UGC/NBHM or any other organization recognized by the Institute will also receive
fellowship as per the rates approved by these awarding organisations.
- Students receiving assistantship from the Institute or from any other
funding agencies will be required to perform academic duties assigned to them by
the departments as per rules in force from time to time.
- The continuation of the assistantship/fellowship will be subject to
satisfactory performance of the duties assigned by the department and
satisfactory progress in the Programme of Research.
- No financial assistance from the Institute will be available to part time
students. Project staff will get funding from project as per rules but will not
get any additional assistance from the Institute.
For
appearing in the PhD interview, to & fro sleeper class railway fare
or equivalent will be paid for the shortest route from the communication
address to the institute.
Selection
ProcedureThe admission council of IIT Guwahati shortlists
candidates on the basis of marks in qualifying examination and performance in
GATE / NET / CEED. The short listed candidates are called for written
test or / and interview. The final selection is made on the basis of
performance in written test / Interview.
Application ProcedureThe Indian Institute of
Technology Guwahati (IITG) invites application from Indian nationals for
admission into Ph.D. programme during the month of September / October.
Application for Ph.D. admission can be purchased in person from IIT
Guwahati or can be requested through post as well, from Head of the concerned
department/centre, IIT Guwahati by furnishing Demand Draft of requisite
amount in favor of Indian Institute of Technology
Guwahati.
