Introduction

Government Law College (GLC), Mumbai, is one of the most distinguished law Institutions of India. Any discussion of the India’s legal system & legal culture today is incomplete, in fact, meaningless without a mention of the Government Law College. Legal luminaries like Lokmanya balgangadhar Tilak (freedom fighter), Dr. B. R. Ambedkar (the architect of the indian Constitution); Chief Jutice M. C. Chagla (the first Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court), Sir Motilal Setalvad (the first Attorney General of Independent India), N. A. Palkhiwala and many other Prominent personalities associated with this Institution have left their footprints behind for all time to come.

Program:  B.L.S., LL.B

The Five Years Integrated Law Course leading to a B.L.S., LL.B.Degree is a ten-semester full time course. The first four semester – 1st and 2nd year of this course consists of a ‘Pre – Law’ course. The students pursuing this course are awarded B.L.S. (Bachelor of Legal Science) Degree on successful completion of the 3 year (i.e. 6th semester). and LL.B. on successful completion of 5 years (i.e. 10th semester). The semester end examination is conducted by University of Mumbai. Academic performance of a candidate is evaluated by the examination conducted at the end of each semester and also the performance in the Practical Training Subjects as per the guidelines issued from time to time by the Bar Council of India.

Eligibility

Admission is based on merit. A minimum of 45% marks in the HSC( 10 2) exam at the first attempt, is the eligibility required to be able to apply for admission. For students with more than 40% marks but less than 45% marks, the University may conduct a Common Eligibility Exam. The admission process for the first year of the Five year course commences immediately after the declaration of HSC results. There is 50% reservation for Reserved Categories from Maharashtra state. The prospectus and admission form will be available at the college office. The Admission form , duly filled, is to be submitted to the college office within the prescribed time. Criteria:

  1. General category: Students from Maharashtra State Board of Sec and HSC exams.
  2. Reserved Category from Maharashtra
  3. General category: students from Boards other than Maharashtra. Students belonging to this category are required to have at least 5% more marks than students of the Maharashtra board.


The selected students are interviewed and then admitted. The cut-off marks vary every year.

Number of Seats: 160

15 % of the seats are reserved for SC candidates and 7.5% for ST candidates. 5% seats are reserved for children/widows/wives of the officers and men of the armed forces including para-military personnel killed/disabled in action or those who died/were disabled in action or those who died/were disabled on duty. 3% sets are reserved for physically handicapped candidates.

The Three Years Law Course leading to the LL.B.

Degree is a six-semester full time course. Students, who wish not to practice as Advocates, are eligible for the LL.B. (General) Degree, at the end of 4th semester. On successful completion of three years (6th semester) the LL.B. Degree is awarded. Semester end examination is conducted by the University of Mumbai at the end of each semester. The academic performance of a candidate is evaluated by the examination conducted at the end of each semester and performance in the Practical Training Subjects as per the guidelines issued from time to time by the Bar Council of India.

L.L.M.

The University of Mumbai conducts the course for the LL.M. Degree. A degree in L.L.M. enable an student to develop his/her interests in many of the major areas of law to which they have been introduced in the LL. B. program. The course also provides opportunities for the study of important specialized areas. The duration of course is two years. A student is permitted to take any two groups out of the eleven groups as specified. Each paper in the group shall carry 100 marks.
