The Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, is one of the oldest institutions of its kind and acclaimed the world over. Established as Imperial Forest Research Institute in 1906, the main thrust areas of the institute are development of technology for eco-friendly preservatives, multi-disciplinary and collaborative research and development of technology for reclamation of wastelands.
The Institute's history is virtually synonymous with the evolution and development of scientific forestry, not only in India, but over the entire Indian sub-continent.
The Institute offers management courses in forest and environment, which is popular among the management aspirants. The admission to these programs is done through entrance test conducted by the Institute. The faculty constitutes of qualified, experienced eminent scientists, professors and foresters.

FRI Dehradun: Eligibility Criteria
- For MSc Environment Management : Three years Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry or Agriculture or BE/BTech in Environment Science.
- For PG Diploma in Natural Resource Management : M. Sc in any discipline.
- For all the above mentioned programs candidates must have50% or above marks in the qualifying exam for the general category and 45% marks for Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes.
FRI Dehradun: Programs
Forest Research Institute in Dehradun conducts various programs in environment and forest management. The courses are conducted through conventional lectures, projects and interactions.
Msc. Environment Management
This is a two year course which equips students with the skills to understand and utilize practical aspects of economics and ecology and various aspects of environmental management.
Post Graduate Diploma in Natural Resource Management
This is a one year course which lays stress on sustainable utilization of renewable natural resources both of plant & animal origin. The course includes aspects of natural resource utilization and conservation.
The other Post Graduate programs include MSc in Forestry, MSc in Wood Science & Technology and Post-Graduate Diploma in Management of Non Wood Forest Product.
FRI Dehradun: Test Pattern
Candidates are selected in order of merit on the basis of aggregate marks secured at the written test in the Entrance Examination conducted by FRI Dehradun. This is an objective type written test of three hours duration divided under four sections.
- Basic Sciences including Social Science (100 questions)
- Arithmetic and Quantitative abilities, Computational ability, qualitative reasoning, Interpretation of Tables, graphs, etc. (40 questions)
- General Knowledge and Current Affairs (30 questions)
- English language, Comprehension, Vocabulary, Grammar, Idioms, etc. (30 questions)
Each question will be followed by four alternative answers. You are required to select the correct one. Read the instructions carefully before answering the questions.
Note: There will be negative marking for wrong answer to the extent of one -fourth (¼) of the marks allotted to the questions.
