Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) was established in 1974. The Department of Industrial and Management Engineering (IME) at IIT Kanpur was the first department in the country that recognized the potential of merging the training of engineering with management. Today the Department is engaged in various activities comprising of teaching, industry consultancy, management development programs, academic research and public sector projects.
The 2-year MBA programme commenced in July 2001. The course is open to engineering graduates of any branch. It consists of four semesters of course work with summers to be spent on a summer internship project in management industry.
The MBA programme specializes in the sectorial areas of Service and Manufacturing and Functional areas of Operations, Systems, Marketing, and Finance.
Every year students are selected through a meticulous admission process that comprises of two phases. In the first phase, students have to appear for the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) conducted for admission to MBA programmes. While in the second phase, the short listed candidates have to perform exceptionally in the Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI) to get selected from the pool of the most talented students applying for the MBA Programme at IIT Kanpur.
