Overview

Milking a cow is no more a household job and work of illiterate or semi literate people. Now, with the advancement of civilization it became the work of professionals. As we all need this white fluid (milk) and its derivatives like cheese, curd, and cream and other substitutes, the demand for milk and milk products are continuously on the rise and hence the need for trend professionals.
 
The place where milk is fetched from animals and processed is called a Dairy; it can be of any size producing few liters of milk to million gallons. In large Dairy set ups where million gallons of milk processed on day to day basis professional services are required for managing processing facilities, substances, supply, cattle, as well as human resources.
 
In India, Dairy industry contributes, to a significant portion of government earning. Government has established boards like National Dairy Development Board (NDDRB) way back in 1965. Further, Operation Flood was started in 1970, which resulted in White Revolution in India and nation became the largest producer of milk and milk products in the world.
 
Today, we have many Dairy Centers of national importance like Amul in Ananad, Gujarat, and Mother Dairy, in New Delhi to fulfill the rising demand of milk and milk products.
 
Dairy business is part of Agriculture and in academics it comes under the bracket of agricultural sciences and engineering. In industry it comes under Agriculture bracket.
 
Considering the importance of dairy industry, various colleges and universities in India offers study programs in Dairying, ranging from certificate level courses to engineering and research. Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) in Dairy Management is such programs offered by various universities and institutes in India to provide trained human resources to Dairy business. Besides universities and institutes also offer certificate programs, diploma programs, and short term courses and organizes workshops for farmers and professionals.
 
The main objective of dairy management course is to provide basic input to students about production, planning and management of dairy farms, entrepreneurship development in milk preservation, entrepreneurship development in dairy processing and management of dairy farm, co-operative and industry.
 
Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) programs in Dairy Management are open to graduate students. Admission is generally offered on the basis of written test, group discussion, and Interview.
 
The candidates who successfully complete the coursework are offered job in administrative category in dairy industry. Work opportunities exists both in government and private sector organizations both in India and overseas. Those willing to pursue higher education may join teaching and research work. The opportunities are enormous for Dairy Management professionals.
