Operations Management

Operations Management is the branch of management that deals with service operations and manufacturing or production operations. Traditionally, operations management refers to the creation, development, production and distribution of goods and related services though independently. Related services include managing purchases, inventory control, quality control, storage, logistics and evaluations. A great deal of focus is on efficiency and effectiveness of the processes.

Operations management is basically for young professional who are already working in this field. This stream of management aims at developing the practical knowledge and understanding besides enhancing their awareness of the human and financial issues in the organizations. Operations management also addresses the internal and external factors which influence operational efficiency and examines the wider context of business strategy and competitive advantage. Because of well-developed problem solving skills, degrees in engineering or experience in engineering related fields are highly beneficial backgrounds for an operations management career.

Persons in these positions often carry responsibilities like production planning, quality control, forecasting, standardization, and process analysis. Many management graduates from manufacturing background enter the consulting field. Those with engineering backgrounds are ideal for assisting in process re-engineering, manufacturing consulting, and manufacturing optimization.

Looking at the past trends,  the demand for operations management has reduced in the modern times, there is still a demand in areas like Supply Chain Management and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning).
