What then, makes a university international?

It should, for starters, have an "international outlook", that tries to attract the best students from around the globe, collaborate with universities & organizations from other countries, encourage cross-country research associations & inculcate the characteristics of a "global citizen" in their students. These were the main attributes that THE considered while preparing this ranking.

What is surprising is that the US which usually dominates any global university ranking, barely made its presence felt in this "international university" ranking - there was only one US institute in the top 30 (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at #22.) These rankings come in the wake of caution advised by the Association of American Universities in the US that other nations would soon replace it as the primary destination for the best students & faculty globally.

Lino Guzzella, president of ETH Zurich, ranked #1 on this list, says: “I know of no top university that does not have a substantial percentage of its faculty, students and workforce that are international. It is simply not possible to achieve high levels of excellence without being open to the world.

The United Kingdom (UK) has 5 universities in the top 10, with a total of 13 institutions featuring in the 2017 ranking.

The University of Hong Kong, the National University of Singapore and the Imperial College London are ranked 3rd, 4th & 5th in this year's ranking.

Five Australian universities have made it to the top 25 in the list. According to Marnie Hughes-Warrington, deputy vice-chancellor (academic) of the Australian National University (ranked #7 in the ranking), simple steps by the local government to make the international students feel welcome (hassle-free visa processing, simple admission procedures, post-study work rights, free travel on city buses etc._ go a long way in making an impact. The key understanding from this year's ranking is that universities across the world need to open up to international students, faculty and research if they want to remain relevant at a global level.
