Online MBA specializations in India

Author:

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree may be pursued in brick-and-mortar business schools as well as online. Generally, MBAs are available part-time, full-time or through executive programs for working professionals. To be eligible, you typically need at least a bachelor's degree and some full-time work experience. Other prerequisites may also need to be fulfilled.

Common specializations

While many specializations are available for MBA candidates online, a few specializations currently appear to be popular. An MBA usually takes two years to complete. The one-year executive MBA is another track that can appeal to working professionals who want to earn an MBA with minimal career disruption. One-year executive MBAs may be available in the specializations below:

Application Forms Now Available
  • Human Resources
  • Information Technology (IT)
  • Marketing
  • Operations
  • Finance

Human resources, sometimes listed as HRM for Human Resource Management, is a concentration that generally includes courses on business and professional management, labor laws, operations, communication and finance. A concentration in IT might include course work in database management, programming and e-commerce. Specialized courses for marketing include advertising, brand management and consumer behavior. Operations often covers aspects of management such as logistics, the supply chain and technology. Finance courses could include capital management, budgeting and business laws. A banking concentration is usually taught separately, but a Finance and Banking specialization may be available at some institutions.

An example program that currently (as of February, 2013) offers all of these specializations is Karnataka State Open University, which has two-year MBA or one-year executive MBA streams. Punjab Technical University offers Human Resource Management, Finance, Marketing and IT concentrations as one or two-year programs. In Tamil Nadu, MS University has specializations in Marketing, Human Resource Management and Finance. Make sure to check for current recognition status from the Distance Education Council before enrolling in programs. Program availability may change, check with program advisors for current offerings.

While fundamental courses of the MBA are generally similar across programs, specializations may allow you to have a degree of focus and knowledge that could be applicable to a future career.

Online MBA specializations globally

Online MBAs are becoming more common not only in India, but around the world. Specializations that are the same or similar to those listed above are commonly offered through online programs in other countries. Health Care Management is another common concentration in places such as the U.S. or the UK. Mid career courses are growing, and some schools with good reputations are offering one-year online programs.
