National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) 2016-17
The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE) conducted by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is a programme intended to nurture talented students. The NTSE scholarship scheme covers academic areas in the sciences, social sciences, engineering and medicine. Financial help under the scholarship is offered as a monthly stipend.
The National Talent Search Examination (NTSE)
For courses in the sciences and social sciences, scholarships are provided up to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) level. For professional courses in engineering and medicine, the NTSE scholarship is available up to the post-graduate (second degree) level. Students in class X are eligible to appear for the Stage I exam conducted by states and union territories.
Based on the results of the test, 1,000 scholarships are awarded. The scholarships are worth Rs.1250 per month (for classes 11 & 12), Rs.2000 per month (for undergraduate & post graduate students). The amount for Ph.D students will be as per UGC standards.
For students belonging to the Scheduled Castes (SC) category, 15 percent of scholarships are reserved. For Scheduled Tribes (ST) students, 7.5 percent of scholarships are reserved. Three percent of scholarships are reserved for Physically Challenged students.
The selection process for the scholarship is conducted in two parts, Stage I and Stage II. Stage I is conducted through a written examination through states and union territories. Students who qualify through the first stage are eligible for the Stage II exam, which is conducted by NCERT. Stage II is a national level exam.
Stage I (state)
- Last date for submission of Application Form: 31 August, 2016 (may vary from state to state)
- Examination in Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Andaman and Nicobar Islands: 5 November, 2016
- Examination in all other states and union territories: 6 November, 2016
- Examination in Bihar and West Bengal: 13 November 2016
Stage II (national)
- Examination in all states and union territories: 14 May, 2017
The NTSE exam pattern for class X is described below:
- Stage I examination: a) Mental Ability Test (MAT) and b) Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) which also includes Language Comprehensive Test
- Stage II examination: a) Mental Ability Test (MAT) and b) Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) which also includes Language Comprehensive Test
Only those candidates who qualify from Stage I may proceed to the Stage II exam.
Rule for state quotas
Each state/union territory has a quota allotted for recommending a number of candidates for Stage II. After the Stage II exam, there is no state/union territory quota. Reservations for SC, ST and Physically Challenged candidates are described above.
The states and union territories may charge a fee for the Stage-I examination. Therefore, before submitting the application form, you may find out the fees charged for Stage-I Examination and also the mode of payment from the respective State Liaison Officers (LOs).
But there is no fee for the stage-II exam conducted by NCERT.
Application form, registration and other details
You may contact the state/union territory liaison officer to obtain the application form. The NTSE application form can be downloaded from NCERT website www.ncert.nic.in. Prior to the application form submission deadline, your completed form should be signed your school principal.
After Stage I, results are announced by states and union territories. NCERT announces the results of the Stage II exam.
Indian students studying abroad can appear for the Stage II exam directly under certain conditions. The application form should be sent with the mark sheet photocopy of the previous exam by Feb, 2017.
