Institute for Social and Economic Change - PhD FellowshipThe Institute for Social and Economic Change (ISEC) is a national institute for inter-disciplinary research and training in social sciences. The institute provides high quality training to scholars in pure as well as applied social sciences so that they become distinguished researchers and teachers in social sciences contributing to the growth and development of the society and the economy.
Every year the Institute offers up to 12 fellowships, including one fellowship under the salary protection scheme. Fellowships are made available to the selected candidates by the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) and ISEC. The Institute also admits part-time candidates for Ph.D. studies, but without fellowship.
Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore, Karnatak and Osmania, and the National Law School of India Universities have provided affiliation to ISEC Ph. D. Programme.
Eligibility Criteria -To be considered for doctoral research fellowships, the applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
- Must have been awarded a Master’s degree or equivalent in the relevant discipline with at least 55% marks in aggregate.
- For fellowships in Population Studies, applicants should have Master’s degree either in Population Studies or Economics/ Statistics/Sociology/Anthropology/Geography, preferably with specialisation in Population Studies.
- For fellowships in Ecology Economics, applicants should have Master’s degree in Economics or Geography, preferably with specialisation in Economic Geography.
- For fellowships in Studies on Institutional Development, applicants should have Master’s degree in one of the following disciplines: Sociology, Education, Political Science/Public Administration or Economics.
- For fellowships in Development Studies, in addition to the disciplines mentioned above, the applicants with Master’s degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Food and Agricultural Marketing Management, Development Planning, Urban and Regional Planning, Rural Development, Sociology and Social Work would also be considered.
- Applicants who have appeared for Master’s degree final examination but waiting for the result, can also apply. However, their applications will be considered only on production of their results (with at least 55% marks; Marks Card to be produced) at the time of the written test.
- Must have qualified in the University Grants Commission NET/JRF (for ICSSR Fellowship) and for salary Protected Fellowship, employed candidates must have qualified in the, UGC (JRF).
- Age Limit: (a) For ICSSR or other sponsored fellowships applicants must be below 28 years in case of general candidates, 33 years in case of SC/STs and 35 years in case of working persons; (b) For ISEC and Teacher Fellowships: No age limit.

Fellowship Value
Students qualified in UGC-NET are paid Rs.6,000/- p.m. as fellowship while non-NET students are paid Rs. 5,000/- p.m. The fellowship is for a period of three years.
Depending upon the performance of the students the institute may consider extending the fellowship for an additional year with suitable financial support. In addition, the students are eligible to an annual contingency grant of Rs. 12,000/- during the fellowship period.
Those selected under salary protection scheme will get salary for 2 years in addition to annual contingency grant of Rs12,000/-. Part-time Fellows are not eligible for fellowship or contingency grant. Selected candidates will be provided ICSSR or ISEC fellowships.
Selection
After an initial scrutiny of the applications, candidates are short-listed on the basis of their academic background, research experience and called for a common entrance test, and those qualifying in it will be required to attend an interview on the subsequent day. Normally, the results are declared on the day of interview.
How to Apply
Applications for admission to the Ph. D programme are invited each year at the all-India level. The information brochure-cum-application form can be obtained from the office of the Registrar either in person or by sending a Demand Draft, favouring "Registrar, ISEC, Bangalore" for Rs. 50/- (Rs. 10/- in case of SC/ST candidates with caste proof) together with a self-addressed stamped (Rs.16/-) envelope (28 X 11 Cms.).
