Ministry of Tribal Affairs - Research Fellowships in Various Aspects of Tribal DevelopmentThe Ministry of Tribal Affairs in association with State Government will award a specified number of fellowships (not exceeding twenty five only) annually with a view to encourage in depth study of the processes of socio-economic change in the tribal areas and of tribal communities particularly in the wake of the new developmental efforts.
The fellowships will be open to scholars belonging to different disciplines like anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Agriculture and Medicine etc. and who are registered for Ph. D. with a recognized University. A scholar belonging to any one of these disciplines will undertake a specific area for his study. This study will however keep in view the broad frame of the total socio-economic situation of the concerned community.
Areas of Study
The broad areas of study have been indicated in annexure 1. They include the following facets –
- Analysis of the process of socio-economic change in the tribal areas.
- Marginal and pre-agricultural communities.
- Forests and Associated Areas.
- Industrial and Urban Context.
- Land, Agriculture and Allied Activities
- Market, Credit and Cooperation.
- Social-Services – health, education, other aspects.
- Labour, Employment, Traditional Industry and Artisans.
- Socio-Cultural – Religious aspects during transition.
Selection
The selection for research fellowships will be made by a selection committee consisting of among other members a representative of the planning commission and from ICSSR/ UGC/ University: that will be set up for his purpose by the ministry. After the selection the list of the selected candidates will be sent to the State Governments. Efforts will also be made to intimate the candidates regarding such selections. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs might stipulate the date by which the State Governments should intimate the date of joining of the candidates. The arrangement will facilitate timely release of grants to the State Governments and disburse the fellowship grants to the candidates.
No. of Scholarships
The total number of fellowships to be awarded each year will not exceed 25 out of which not exceeding 1/4th may be senior and the remaining junior fellowships. The number however may be increased if more candidates are available for undertaking work in priority areas. Some universities may even sponsor more than one study in the same area so that a small multi-disciplinary group of research scholars may simultaneously study different facets of the socio-economic life.
Duration
The period of fellowship will be ordinary 2 years which may be extended up to a maximum of 3 years, only on the basis of request by the state government as well as recommendation of the guide.
Value of Fellowships
The rate of fellowships and allowances for incidental expenditure for doctoral and post-doctoral work will be as follows:-
1. Value (a) Post Doctoral: The amount of the post doctoral fellowship will be Rs. 3,200/- per month.
(b) Doctoral: The value of the doctoral fellowship will be Rs. 2,800/- per month.
2- Contingency Grant: The fellowships carry an annual contingency Grant of Rs. 10,000 for post doctoral and doctoral stage for meetiing approved contingent expenditure connected with the research work such as stationery, typing, graphs and charts, journals, periodicals, travel expenses etc.
The contingency grant for the second year will be released only after receiving the copy of the thesis by the state govt. from the candidate.
How to Apply
Candidates having the requisite qualifications may apply when advertisement calling for applications is issued by the Ministry to the heads of the Tribal Research Institute of the state in which the field work is proposed to be conducted or to the Director Tribal welfare or equivalent officers in those states where there is no Tribal Research Institute. The applicant will be required to submit a brief synopsis of about 3 to 4 pages indicating the subject of his study.
